Kai Cenat’s appearance at the 25th BET Awards featured many memorable moments. The cultural event occurred on June 9, 2025, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, attracting many stars to celebrate achievements in Black entertainment and honor selected individuals. The 2025 BET Award was hosted by Kevin Hart, marking his second time as the event's host.
Kai Cenat was one of the many notable individuals who attended the event. He streamed his entire evening live, sharing his interactions with nearly all the celebrities present.
On the red carpet, Cenat met with Reginae Carter, the daughter of Lil Wayne, as well as Young Thug, Keke Palmer, Ciara, and Moneybagg Yo. The Twitch streamer also enthusiastically conversed with Black icons Snoop Dogg and Kirk Franklin.
Cenat also found himself on stage, presenting an award and introducing Playboi Carti to perform. One highlight of his evening was interacting with Kendrick Lamar, who took home five awards out of seven nominations.
Their backstage encounter attracted the attention of Kai's viewers, mainly due to the streamer's close relationship with Canadian rapper Drake, whose rivalry with Kendrick Lamar has been named one of the biggest beefs in the music industry.
Another of Kai Cenat's interactions has sparked a frenzy among internet users. The 23-year-old streamer had a run-in with hip-hop star Wale, but he did not recognize and treated him as just a fan. The moment has sparked a discussion among netizens on Kai Cenat’s hip-hop awareness.
Fans react to Kai Cenat’s awkward exchange with Wale
@FearedBuck on X shared a clip featuring Kai Cenat’s exchange with Wale with the caption:
“Kai Cenat ran into Hip-Hop Legend Wale and didn't even know who he was.”
In the video, Kai bumped into the Lotus Flower Bomb hitmaker, who was busy with his Nintendo Switch. After exchanging greetings in which Kai addresses Wale as Broski, the two parted ways but not before they exchanged a short conversation about the game the rapper was playing. Shortly after their parting, the streamer’s chat room reveals that Wale was someone of importance.
“Wally,” he said, mispronouncing his name. “That’s someone crazy. The whole chat knows him.”
Despite his videographer correcting him and mentioning his hit songs, Kai remained unaware of who the rapper was.
The clip garnered several reactions as netizens took to the comments section to express their opinions.
Some netizens felt it was normal for Kai Cenat not to know Wale, claiming that calling Wale a legend was a bit of a stretch as there are people who don't know him.
“He's not a legend if people don't know who he is, on sight. kai doesn't know him, because he's no 'legend' Never heard of Wale, and I've only been into Hip-Hop for 40 years, so he's no 'legend'. KRS-One is a 'legend' Wale is just Wale....,” @EvanderSmartBTC commented.
“Ppl need to humble themselves and understand that not everyone will know who you are. Someone can know your song but not know the artist. That’s life. He interacted with him like he does everyone else. I don’t think Kai had any ill intentions behind his question.” @AdoreMy_Essence wrote.
Some found the interaction amusing and commented on the generational gaps between some of the stars in the entertainment industry.
“Haha, gotta love those moments where worlds collide! Wale’s a legend, but sometimes the new gen just moves so fast, they miss the OG vibes. Wonder if Kai Googled him afterward!” @Sierracummingsx tweeted.
“Honestly this was very genuine lol he definitely ain’t no and there was no disrespect at all… we really at a time kids not gonna be knowing some of our generation greats!” @PimpmikeC commented.
Many netizens however did not find the interaction amusing, questioning Kai Cenat’s musical knowledge and appreciation for Black culture.
“I mean he is a Twitch boy child, lol even with his young age this is lame and embarrassing. Little dude needs to do better if wants that coolness and aura he so desperately craves,” @RyanCornett stated.
“This the world we live in. Someone you a**holes made famous with little actual talent didn't know who Wale, an exceptionally talent artist, was. This cosplays as a Black American bc doesn't really give a sh*t about us or the people we hold up,” @AccountingB0B added.
