Snapchat has announced a new update that’s not sitting well with many of its users. The platform revealed that its popular Memories feature will now come with a limit 5GB of storage for free, and anything beyond that will cost between $1.99 and $15.99 per month.

If users don’t pay, their older Snaps will stay, but the newer ones that exceed the limit will be deleted. That detail alone has sparked outrage online, with people worried about losing years of saved photos and videos. What was once a free cloud for memories now feels like another monthly bill.

Snapchat charging for Memories storage

The news spread quickly across social media, and the reactions came pouring in. The post that went viral captured the mood perfectly: “snapchat charging for memories like ppl even use that app anymore 😭”. It struck a chord because many feel Snapchat is no longer as relevant as it once was, making the sudden paywall hard to justify.

Users voiced their frustrations in different ways. One comment put it bluntly:

“This is how you turn loyal users into ex-users. Nobody’s paying rent for their own photos.”

Another added with disbelief: “Damnnnnnn randomly taxing our memories is crazy.”

Some took a more practical approach, urging others to act fast.

“Download them all while you can,”

one person warned, highlighting the fear of losing precious moments stored on the app. And then there were those who laughed at the scale of their own libraries.

“I probably have 1TB of memories on there lmao,”

another user admitted, pointing out how costly this could get for heavy savers.

The reactions went viral because this update feels like poor timing. It isn’t the go-to platform it used to be, especially with TikTok and Instagram dominating the space. Charging for something as sentimental as “memories” left many feeling that the app was out of touch with what users actually want.

The viral post resonated because it summed up a bigger frustration with apps in general people are tired of being charged for features they once enjoyed for free. For Snapchat, instead of winning back attention, the move seems to have reminded users why they drifted away in the first place.

Snapchat’s decision to put a price tag on Memories has turned into a PR headache. For many, it feels less like an upgrade and more like paying rent on their own photos. Whether people choose to pay up or move their Snaps elsewhere, one thing’s certain the internet isn’t impressed.
