Comedian and writer Bill Maher recently sat down with Ben Shapiro and Tim Alberta to discuss Charlie Kirk’s death, a video of which was posted on his Real Time with Bill Maher YouTube channel on September 13.
Maher said Kirk had previously been on his show, and he liked him. The comedian mentioned that Charlie Kirk was shot dead when he was debating at an event called 'Prove Me Wrong.' He went on:
“And too many people think the way to do that, to prove you wrong is to just eliminate you from talking altogether. So, the people who mocked his death or justified it, I think you're gross. I have no use for you.”
He continued:
“The people who are saying now we're at war, I have no use for you. So, my first question, true or false? I think the real war is not between left or right. It's between the people on both sides who want a war and the people who don't.”
Ben Shapiro responded that it was accurate. Speaking about his relationship with Charlie Kirk, Shapiro said he had known him for more than a decade. At the time, Kirk was only 18. He said he witnessed Kirk’s growth into a man, how he settled in life and had a family. Shapiro felt that Kirk was good at his job. He mentioned that Kirk lost his life while he was in the middle of a conversation. He added:
“And we do have a serious problem in this country with people who believe that violence is the proper response to speech.”
What did Tim Alberta say about Charlie Kirk?
Journalist Tim Alberta said he did not know Charlie Kirk quite well. However, he said he often disagreed with Kirk from a distance. Despite that, he admired how, in the last few years, Charlie always wanted open discussions and debates, whether on campuses or podcasts. Alberta added:
“He was not trying to cancel or censor or shut people down. He wanted to have those conversations with you. And it's tragic and it's terrible on so many levels. This is a young guy. He's a husband. He's a father, child of God. And he was killed representing the very American ideal that we settle our fights with words, not with weapons, which sounds cliche, but it's how we're here.”
One of the witnesses from the shooting, Dallin Smith, recently spoke to CNN about the incident that happened on September 10. He said it was a different atmosphere on the day, but he did not expect so many attendees to be present. Smith, who is a former student of Utah Valley University, said he had a question for Charlie Kirk.
Dallin Smith said that after hearing the gunshot, he looked over the railing, thinking it might have been just a firecracker. However, then he saw many people crying, running away quickly, and moving toward Charlie Kirk. When he went back inside the building, more people were rushing out, trying to escape the scene.
