This year’s Burning Man has turned tragic, as a male attendee was found dead on the night of August 30, surrounded by blood. Deputies from the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office and Bureau of Land Management rangers reached the site and discovered his body.
The week-long desert event started on August 24 and was scheduled to end on September 1. The identity of the person who died at the scene is not yet confirmed.
The statement released by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office read:
"The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Forensic Science Division, was called in to assist in processing the scene and collection of evidence. On site law enforcement interviewed several participants in the immediate area. This process is still ongoing and the portion of the ‘City’ where this occurred will have heavy law enforcement presence until the scene can be released."
The statement further read:
"Although this act appears to be a singular crime, all participants should always be vigilant of their surroundings and acquaintances."
The body has been sent to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office, as per the police statement. Burning Man said they are fully working with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
Burning Man releases a statement after the tragedy
After the tragic incident, the Burning Man festival released a statement to 8NewsNow, as per The Independent. The statement read:
"The investigation is ongoing and the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office will be the primary source of further information. If you are in Black Rock City, do not interfere with law enforcement activity."
It continues:
"The safety and well-being of our community are paramount. Participants have access to free public WiFi at the 3 and 9 o’clock plazas, Playa Info (near Center Camp), Ranger HQ (Esplanade & 6:30), at the Emergency Services Department station at 5:15 & Esplanade, and in Center Camp should they need to communicate with loved ones."
According to ABC7 News, the festival was speculated to see around 70000 to 80000 attendees this year.
While the investigation into the man’s death continues, Burning Man is also facing other challenges. According to Royal Ambulance, the medical team serving Black Rock City, 31 people were taken to hospitals during the event. Officials said three people went into cardiac arrest on the playa but were revived.
The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Land Management are still investigating to learn more about the case and how it happened.
