The story of D'Angelo and Angie Stone is one that blends love, music, and family. The musicians started dating each other in the mid-1990s when Angie was already a familiar face in R&B and D'Angelo was starting his career. Both their personal lives and their professional directions were influenced by their time together.

Both artists died in 2025 within months of one another, and that brought back to light their former relationship. After D'Angelo's death in October, People magazine looked into his relationship with Angie and wrote that he was "deeply devastated" by her death earlier that year.

As People reports, D'Angelo was 19 when he met Angie Stone in the mid-1990s. Angie was about 30 and a working singer and songwriter at that time. She had been part of groups such as The Sequence and Vertical Hold before embarking on solo work.

According to Distractify, Angie met D'Angelo when the latter was getting ready for his first album, Brown Sugar, in 1995. She started assisting him in writing and recording songs shortly thereafter, and the musical partnership soon became a romantic relationship.

During subsequent interviews, Angie reminisced about those initial years, recalling the neo-soul musician as a teenager with glasses and loose-fitting shorts who didn't catch many people's attention at first. She mentioned that she had seen something special in him and wanted to help him grow as an artist. Their relationship was both creative and romantic, laying the foundation for the success of D'Angelo in neo-soul music.

Relationship, Parenthood, and Separation

By 1997, their relationship had become more serious. They had their son, Michael Archer Jr., that year, who sometimes goes by his stage name, Swayvo Twain. People asserted that even after their romantic relationship collapsed, the two were dedicated parents.

During this period, the pair continued working together musically. Angie co-wrote a number of songs on D'Angelo's records, such as "Send It On," which appeared on his 2000 album Voodoo. USA Today commented that their collaborative work influenced the sound that characterized the late 1990s R&B and soul music.

Their relationship had ended by 1999. Distractify writes that they were together for about four years before they broke up. D'Angelo was 25, while Angie was 38 years old. Even after the breakup, Angie gave statements in previous interviews that she would "never disrespect" Michael's dad and that they still kept their relationship respectful out of respect for their son.
