R&B singer D’Angelo died on October 14, 2025, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 51. This comes a few months following the sad death of his ex-partner, Angie Stone, who was involved in a vehicle accident.
The two artists had a long history, both personally and professionally. They fell in love during the 90s and had a son, Michael Jr., in 1998. This relationship remained part of R&B folklore even after their separation.
Following the death of Stone in March 2025, people close to D’Angelo claimed that he was shattered. Her death was a significant emotional shock to the singer, who already had serious health problems at the time.
D’Angelo’s reaction to Angie Stone’s passing

When news broke about Angie Stone’s fatal car crash near Montgomery, Alabama, on March 1, 2025, D’Angelo was reportedly devastated. According to People magazine's source:
“Losing Angie was devastating to him. He never arrived at her funeral service. He was extremely overwhelmed.”
Although the two had not been together romantically for many years, they remained connected through their son and shared musical legacy.
The source added, “They’d moved on with their lives romantically of course, but the idea that both of them would be gone within the same year is sad.”
Another person close to the singer said D’Angelo “kept to himself” in the weeks following Stone’s death. He avoided public appearances and was said to be struggling with grief.
“They were forever tied as this pop culture couple,” the source concluded.

Their history and bond through music

D’Angelo and Angie Stone joined forces in the early 1990s, contributing to the neo-soul scene. Stone even travelled with him as a background vocalist during his Brown Sugar tour and also contributed to his sound. This was an artistic collaboration with her that saw her co-write a song, Everyday, on her debut album, Black Diamond, in 1999.
In a 2014 interview with GQ, Stone said she knew D’Angelo would become a major artist. “I knew a superstar was on the rise the moment I met him,” she said.
Their bond grew over time, and they eventually became a couple despite their 13-year age difference.
In a 2023 interview with VladTV, Stone reflected on their relationship.
“He pursued me, I did not pursue him,” she said. “I thought he was older than he was because he had an old soul. At the time, we were just the best of friends. As time grew, we ended up falling for each other.”
Fans worldwide have been mourning the loss of two icons this year.
