Sean “Diddy” Combs is adjusting to life behind bars at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Fort Dix in New Jersey. According to prison documents obtained by CBS News, the hip-hop mogul has taken up work in the prison chapel and joined a drug treatment program as part of his early rehabilitation efforts. Combs, 56, began serving a more than four-year sentence on prostitution-related charges after his recent conviction in New York.

Reports say that Diddy’s daily routine now involves both work and participation in treatment activities. His publicist shared that Combs works in the chapel library, describing the environment as “respectful” and “rewarding.” Prison officials also confirmed that he is enrolled in the Residential Drug Abuse Treatment Program (RDAP), the Bureau of Prisons’ most intensive substance abuse program.

However, Diddy’s first days in prison have not been without trouble. He was recently written up for breaking prison communication rules by making a three-way phone call, an offense that could temporarily restrict his phone and commissary privileges. The infraction came just days after he arrived at Fort Dix on October 30.

Combs was assigned to the job as a chaplain’s aide, which is considered one of the better assignments in the prison. The job generally consists of such things as taking care of the chapel library, cleaning the office, and maintaining records.

Former corrections officials told CBS News that this job carries a certain status in the inmate community. It is an assignment that gives access to a private, air-conditioned office, and often includes food that comes from various religious services.

The chapel is one of the few places where the inmates can get together freely, making this assignment both responsible and desirable. These chaplain aides sometimes help prepare the call-out lists, which designate the inmates who may leave their cells for programs or doctors’ appointments.

This assignment gives the chaplain aides a certain responsibility not generally accorded to the regular run of the inmates. Combs, who has said that he was reared a Catholic, has spoken publicly of his belief in God, but does not profess any religious belief. He was seen reading the Bible during his trial, and his publicist said he finds the chapel assignment interesting and educational.

Soon after his transfer to Fort Dix, Diddy violated a prison rule by making a three-person phone call on November 3. Prison rules prohibit inmates from joining multiple people on a single call, even for legal discussions. Officials said the incident involved a conversation with a woman who added another person described as a “digital person.” Diddy later explained that it was a call with his attorney and a communications head to prepare a media statement.

Authorities recommended that Combs lose 90 days of phone and commissary privileges for the violation. His representatives said the call was for legal purposes and protected by the attorney-client privilege. It is unclear if the punishment has been enforced.

At the same time, Diddy has been accepted into the RDAP unit, a program that helps inmates recover from substance abuse. The program can reduce a prison sentence by up to one year upon completion. His team said he is taking his recovery seriously and wants to focus on personal growth and change.
