The chess community is saddened by the death of American Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, who died in his late 20s when he was only a few weeks away from celebrating his 30th birth anniversary. His death was announced by the Charlotte Chess Center where he worked as one of the main coaches and promoters of the game.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the center wrote

“The Naroditsky family shares the sad news of Daniel’s unexpected passing. Daniel was a talented chess player, educator, and beloved member of the chess community. We ask for privacy as the family grieves.”

Daniel Naroditsky’s passing has left players and fans in shock. The sudden news spread quickly through the chess community, with tributes pouring in from top players and colleagues who had worked closely with him over the years.


Reactions from the global chess community

Grandmasters, coaches, and fans expressed their grief and disbelief across social media.

World No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura was among the first to respond, saying, “I’m devastated. This is a massive loss for the world of chess.”
Indian Grandmaster Srinath Narayanan posted, “Lost for words. So young, so brilliant. The word ‘tragic’ doesn’t even begin to describe the emotion felt.”

Many echoed similar thoughts, describing how Naroditsky’s influence extended far beyond the chessboard.

Chess coach R.B. Ramesh, who worked with Naroditsky during the pandemic, wrote, “Deepest condolences to Danya’s family and friends. Cannot believe such a nice human being is not among us anymore. He was extremely kind, courteous, talented, and generous.”

Other players like Vidit Gujrathi and Alireza Firouzja also expressed their condolences, calling the loss “heartbreaking.”

Daniel Naroditsky’s career and contribution to chess

Daniel Naroditsky was made a Grandmaster in 2013 when he was 18. Throughout the years, he had been among the best players and instructors of the game. He was consistently ranked in the top 200 in the world and 15th in the United States in classical chess.

In 2023, he made his first 2700 FIDE Blitz and went on with enhancing his blitz and rapid performance. He was the U.S. National Blitz Champion in the first half of the year and has a FIDE blitz rating of 2732, which ranked him 18th worldwide and 6th in America.

Daniel Naroditsky had an online reputation as well. He developed his fanbase by means of his Twitch and YouTube platforms, where he taught and provided game analysis and commentary with over 800,000 followers.
