On May 28, 2025, President Donald Trump commuted the sentences of gang leader Larry Hoover. According to NBC News, the commutation followed Kanye West’s lobbying at the Oval Office demanding the sentence reduction.

The gang leader’s son, Larry Hoover Jr., issued a statement to TMZ on May 28, 2025, expressing gratitude to West for his support. He said:

“It started a long time ago with Kanye. Kanye put us on the platform and Kanye and Kim were in touch with Alice. We seen Miss Alice and we knew that that was the way to go if we ever had a chance.”

The gangster has three sons: Larry “Lil Larry” Bernard, Larry Hoover Jr., and Tyree Hoover. Speaking of how Kanye West helped them, Hoover Jr. mentioned:

“He had a very big part because he started it all off. He put us on the platform. He took us to the White House on his platform where he didn’t have to do that. He stuck his neck out there. We know he don’t have a problem with sticking his neck out there about what he believes in and I am glad he believes in this and I have got to do nothing but salute him for this.”

Hoover Jr. acknowledged that the effort was a collective one but emphasized Alice Marie Johnson as the key figure who made the most significant impact. He noted that while many people were involved, including Josh, Gleeson, and Jennifer Bonjean, Alice was the one in the White House advocating for the pardon.

Why does Larry Hoover Jr. think his father should not be in state custody?

Larry Hoover Jr. expressed his gratitude to President Trump, calling the moment a lifelong dream realized after 52 years. He mentioned that his father had lived like a caged animal, and his first desire after release was to savor a home-cooked meal.

However, he emphasized that the fight wasn’t over, as they still needed to stop his transfer to state custody. He said:

“So, it’s time for him to get a chance to restart life. He says he believes in redemption and he is a different person. He is not the same person that he was when he went away 50 years ago. He is gonna be released from Federal custody but then we want the governor Princeton to sign that pinstroke and let him, let him free.”

He argued that locking up a 70-year-old man was unnecessary, costly, and pointless, especially since his father was no longer a threat and had already served his time. Meanwhile, Kanye West took to his X on May 29, 2025, to express his excitement about the news. He wrote:

“WORDS CAN’T EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE FOR OUR DEVOTED ENDURING PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP FOR FREEING LARRY HOOVER.”

Larry Hoover founded the street gang in Chicago known as the Gangster Disciples. He was also charged with the murder of William "Pooky" Young in 1973.

Following the commutation of his sentence, the Bonjean Law Group stated that although the court did not render a fair decision, Hoover still managed to have his voice heard thanks to the efforts of committed supporters and advocates. They added that fortunately, President Trump listened to Hoover’s request and took steps to bring him justice.
