KATSEYE’s latest single, Gnarly, has been stirring up more than just dance challenges, and member Lara isn’t shying away from the conversation.
Addressing the response to the track, which has sparked both heated debates and enthusiastic praise online, the singer offered a candid take on the polarized reactions.
“We've received a lot of backlash about the song, but we've also received a lot of love. It's for the girls that get it, it's not supposed to be too serious. It's crazy how people switch up.”
Lara also addressed the discourse during KATSEYE’s recent interview with Teen Vogue:
“It's sort of good when people so strongly dislike something. Because I think it just shows that it makes people feel something strong, whether that's dislike or they really like it.”
“Gnarly,” the girl group’s latest single, is a bold dive into hyperpop. Shortly after its release, it sparked immediate debate on social media. The genre-defying track, produced by Alice Longyu Gao, didn’t just land softly with fans, but it landed hard. It was a risk they took that even the members initially had doubts.
Yoonchae recalled:
“We screamed.”
Meanwhile, Sophia Laforteza added:
“We knew we would make it our own.”
And they did. The visuals, the choreography, and the attitude all clicked. Eyekons, the group’s devoted fandom, helped the song climb the Billboard Hot 100, giving KATSEYE their first entry.
For Sophia, polarizing reactions come with the territory.
“We're always told by our team [that] if you're a trendsetter or if you have this influence, a lot of the things that you're going to bring into the world, people aren't going to understand from the beginning.”
Fans react to KATSEYE Lara’s comments on “Gnarly”
Despite the split opinions, fans jumped online to support both the track and Lara’s honesty:
“gnarly is literally the song of the summer. i have been listening to it since it dropped,” @geokonik__ commented.
“Hated first but it’s actually a grower and a bop,” @ariolaneedynasa admitted.
“i mean i don’t get why complain about people switching up . like there’re aloud to not like a song than in the future like it? like do u want people to keep on hating or smth,” @lilsmidzy04 wrote.
“The song really hits the mark, super Western. Lots of big artists know this song, the listeners aren’t the chart-obsessed type tho lol,” @namjaaideul said.
