Motown legend Smokey Robinson faces criminal probe amid multiple s*xual assault allegations

Smokey Robinson, who has allegedly been accused of sexual assault by his four former housekeepers, is currently facing a criminal investigation, according to a report by NBC News.

According to a report from the outlet, the investigation is being conducted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and is currently in its early stages. A spokesperson for LASD said:

“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Bureau is actively investigating criminal allegations involving William Robinson AKA 'Smokey Robinson.' The investigation is in the early stages, and we have no further comment.”

John Harris and Herbert Hayden, the lawyers representing the plaintiff, stated in a release to USA Today that they are "pleased to learn that the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept has opened a criminal investigation into our clients' claims of sexual assault against Smokey Robinson."

He added,

“Our clients intend to fully cooperate with LASD's ongoing investigation in the pursuit of seeking justice for themselves and others that may have been similarly assaulted by him.”

How did Smokey Robinson's lawyers respond to his criminal probe?

Smokey Robinson's lawyers have responded to the criminal investigation by strongly denying the allegations and welcoming the inquiry. The R&B singer's attorney, Christopher Frost, stated in a statement reported by USA Today:

“We are aware that a police report has now been filed by the Plaintiffs in the civil lawsuit. It is clear to us what is happening here. Plaintiffs filed a police report only after they filed a $50 million lawsuit. This means only that the police are now required to investigate.”

Smokey Robinson's attorney continued:

“We welcome that investigation, which involves Plaintiffs who continue to hide their identities, because exposure to the truth is a powerful thing. We feel confident that a determination will be made that Mr. Robinson did nothing wrong, and that this is a desperate attempt to prejudice public opinion and make even more of a media circus than the Plaintiffs were previously able to create.”

He concluded his statement by saying,

“The record will ultimately demonstrate that this is nothing more than a manufactured lawsuit intended to tarnish the good names of Smokey and Frances Robinson, for no other reason than unadulterated avarice.”

According to the civil lawsuit which was reportedly filed on May 6, 2025, at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, by the four women identified as Jane Doe 1 through 4, claimed that Smokey Robinson repeatedly r*ped and s*xually assaulted them while they were employed as housekeepers at his Chatsworth, Bell Canyon and Las Vegas residences.

The suit additionally asserted that his wife, Francis, who was reportedly aware of his sexual misconduct, failed to protect the women. Instead, she allegedly fostered a hostile work environment for them, as reported by the BBC.

The women alleged that the 85-year-old singer forced them to have vaginal, oral, and digital s*x with him over the years, as per a report in the Los Angeles Times. The incidents reportedly took place between January 2023 and April 2024.

According to the complaint from the plaintiffs, the couple faces accusations of labor violations, which include issues with wages, breaks, meal periods, and both holiday and overtime pay, as reported by the outlet.
