Four people lost their lives in a shooting incident on July 28 at the NFL headquarters in Manhattan. This also included a New York City police officer named Didarul Islam, according to ESPN. As per USA Today, one National Football League employee, believed to be a man named Craig Clementi, is also injured.
On July 29, Roger Goodell, commissioner of the National Football League, issued a statement through email that read:
"I want to take a moment to reach out to you all following yesterday's tragic events. Our hearts go out to all of the victims and their families, and we are deeply grateful for the first responders and medical staff who acted so quickly and continue to provide care."
The statement continued:
"Our thoughts and prayers remain especially with our colleague who was impacted. He is currently surrounded by his family and members of the NFL community, and we are all continuing to hope for and support his full recovery."
Who is the identified shooter behind the NFL headquarters shooting?
The police have identified the shooter as Shane Tamura, a Las Vegas resident and a football player who was carrying an M4 rifle. The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. on July 28, when Tamura entered a skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. He was later found dead at the scene.
According to ESPN, Tamura was dealing with mental health issues. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a statement during the press conference:
"We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location"
Police have not yet found out what led him to carry out the attack.
The NFL community pays tribute after the fatal shooting
The National Football League community is paying their tributes after the tragic incident that killed four people. Atlanta Falcons coach Raheem Morris said in a statement reported by the Associated Press:
"Just want to start out addressing the senseless violence that happened in New York. Just send our thoughts and prayers to everybody involved, including one of our own."
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid released a statement saying:
"The people at the league office that had to go through all that. It's a bad deal. We've got to try to keep peace somewhere here. There's too much of this."
Statement by Cleveland Browns owner Dee Haslam read:
"I would be remiss if we didn't start out acknowledging what happened yesterday at the NFL headquarters. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families that have lost their loved ones and we honor the policeman that also died in the line of duty, and our prayers are with the ones that are injured."
The National Football League's New York office will reportedly stay closed until August 8, with employees asked to work from home.
