Brussels turned blue over the weekend as Rihanna led the festivities for the global premiere of the new Smurfs movie on Saturday, June 28. The pop superstar not only produced the upcoming family film but also voices the character Smurfette, who leads a major rescue mission in this live-action animated reboot.

At the premiere, Rihanna, who is pregnant with her third child, interacted warmly with children and walked the blue carpet in a full Smurfette costume. She later joined the audience arm-in-arm with longtime partner A$AP Rocky.

Chris Miller, the film’s director, arrived holding plush Smurf toys, and co-stars James Corden and Dan Levy were also in attendance. Most guests leaned into the theme, donning various shades of Smurf blue for the occasion.

The celebration extended well beyond the theater. In honor of the Smurfs’ Belgian roots, originally created by comic artist Peyo, Brussels hosted a weekend of Smurf-themed events. The iconic Mannekin Pis statue wore a No-Name Smurf outfit, tourist buses were decked out in blue, and the Grand-Place transformed into a tribute to the beloved characters.

The new Smurfs film premieres in U.S. theaters on July 18.

Rihanna releases “Friend of Mine” for Smurfs soundtrack

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s new public appearance comes a month after she returned with a surprise single, “Friend of Mine,” the soundtrack for the upcoming Smurfs animated film.

The upbeat, club-themed song is produced by Elijah Noll, Tenroc, Elkan, Jon Bellion, Pete Nappi, and Lee Stashenko. It features a playful hook and blends family-friendly energy with polished pop production. One standout lyric reads:

“Just met you tonight, but you feel like a friend of mine.”

Though it’s aimed at a younger audience, the track adds another layer to Rihanna’s evolution, especially as a mother. It marks her first release since entering a new phase of life, and comes just days after she revealed she's expecting her third child with A$AP Rocky.

At the 2025 Met Gala, she surprised fans and press with her pregnancy announcement, accompanied by Rocky, who co-chaired the gala this year. She revealed her baby bump at the event in a sharply tailored ensemble aligned with the night’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme.

Meanwhile, there’s still no official word on her due date or the timeline for her R9, Rihanna recently weighed in on the eagerly anticipated album. During the gala, she chatted with ET, where she briefly talked about her pregnancy:

“I’m good, I’m shockingly feeling okay and not too overwhelmed at the moment.”

The interviewer then inquired:

“Is this putting R9 on pause even longer? Because you were in production.”

The pop star then responded playfully:

“No…Maybe a few videos, but I could still sing.”

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are currently parents to two: RZA Athelston and Riot Rose.
