Author and commentator Candace Owens has been hit with a defamation lawsuit by Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron. This happened after Owens allegedly claimed that Brigitte was born male. Meanwhile, academic and author Marc Lamont Hill shared his thoughts about the situation on a recent episode of The Joe Budden Podcast. He said:

“It’s interesting to watch this play out. One of the things Candace Owens does is traffic and conspiracies and conspiracy theories. And the internet is filled with right-wing conspiracy theories, whether it's pizzagate, whether all these things, right?”

Hill explained that one of the rumors going around was about Brigitte Macron being born male and pretending to be a woman. However, he claimed:

“The evidence isn’t good, right? Because it’s not true. Let me be clear. It's not true. We here at Joe Budden podcast saying it’s not true. But even if you were inclined to believe her, she hasn't made a good case for it. I think part of why they do that is because they assume that this person is so big and so famous and in another country that I can make all this money with conspiracy theories.”

However, Marc Lamont Hill claimed that he didn’t believe Candace Owens was lying. He felt she might believe the conspiracy theory to be true, as people could be influencing her. As a result, he thought she might bear the brunt for it, and might lose her money.

What did Candace Owens say about Brigitte Macron’s lawsuit against her?

In July 2025, Candace Owens shared a video saying that she was sued by Brigitte Macron. However, she felt it was not a good idea and the First Lady of France should fire everybody around her. According to Owens, Brigitte made history for all the wrong reasons. She also added:

“And I want to be very clear here right at the top that this is obvious, very clear that it is an obvious and desperate public relations strategy. That's what this is.”

She also mentioned that Brigitte Macron had previously filed lawsuits against two journalists and lost subsequently. Speaking about that, Candace Owens said:

“And Brigitte's world, therefore, came crashing down because that was her only effective PR strategy. That was the only thing that they used to dissuade the rumors that she was born a man. It was an absolute farce of a lawsuit, which relied upon the public not knowing the details of the lawsuit at all.”

Candace Owens said the claims about Brigitte Macron were not wild rumors from extreme groups or random internet threads but were, in her view, real. Talking about the lawsuit Brigitte filed against her, she suggested it was only done to get media attention.

Owens believed the lawsuit itself was being used as proof to make people think the rumors were false, but she argued that filing it was proof the rumors were true.
