On Wednesday several media outlets reported that Meghan Markle's estranged father, Thomas Markle, was rushed to a hospital in the Philippines and underwent surgery. On Friday, Thomas Markle's son confirmed to the Daily Mail that his father's left leg was amputated in a surgery. As per Markle Jr., the amputation was necessary, as doctors said that it was a life-or-death situation.

As per TMZ, a blood clot in the leg stopped the blood circulation and consequently, the leg turned black. Markle Jr. noted that his father was in a serious condition.

"There was no option. I was told the leg had to be removed and it was a case of life or death... One of his doctors said the next two or three days are critical ... They were worried about infection setting in -- sepsis or gangrene. The flesh was black and dying," Thomas Markle Jr. told Daily Mail.

However, amid the serious health concerns, Meghan Markle has reportedly not contacted her father yet. The Duchess distanced herself from her father in 2018 before her marriage to Prince Harry. According to Us Weekly, Meghan Markle's father staged a photo of himself trying on a suit. The former lighting director allegedly posed for the picture in exchange for money.

The action infuriated the Duchess, as she was about to get married and such an action put the Royal Family's respect at stake. However, Thomas Markle could not attend the wedding of his daughter, as he suffered a heart attack days before the ceremony.

When Meghan Markle opened up about her strained relationship with her father in a docuseries

In her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess expressed that she felt "betrayed" by her father. In Netflix's docuseries Harry and Meghan, the Sussexes addressed the issue.

“H[arry] and I called my dad. I said, ‘They’re saying you’re taking money from the tabloids to stage photos. Is this true?’ He says, ‘No.’And on that call, I’d said to him, ‘Look. If they can’t stop this story, then it’s going to come out tomorrow, so why don’t we send someone right now to your house to get you out of there now because if that’s the case, your house will be swarmed by media. We’ll get you out.’ "

Meghan Markle continued sharing,

"He said, ‘No. I have things I need to do.’ And it felt really cagey. I was like, ‘It doesn’t make sense.’ And when we hung up, I looked at H[arry]. I was like, ‘I don’t know why but I don’t believe him.’” Meghan Markle said in the docuseries.

Following the fallout, Thomas Markle moved to Asia to start a new life. Per Us Weeekly, in a 2018 interview, he confessed his mistake and wished Meghan Markle and Prince Harry a happy life.
