Hilary Duff recently made a comeback to music by releasing her first song in ten years. According to People Magazine, the song titled "Mature" was released on Thursday, October 6, and marks her first song since her fifth studio album Breathe In. Breathe Out was released back in 2015. The song, which presents a conversation between the now-adult Hilary Duff and her younger self, was co-written with her husband, Mathew Koma, whom she married in 2019. A part of the lyrics from the song reads:

"She's me, I'm her in a different font/Just a few years younger, a new haircut/Very Leo of you with your Scorpio touch/Now, now/Going down on her on your vintage rug/Bet she's so impressed by your Basquiat/And she thinks you're deep in the ways you're not/Now, now/I can't put it on her, she's a sweet kid/But she's taking the bait like we all did/She looks like all of your girls but blonder / A little like me just younger / Bet she loves when she hears you say / You’re so mature for your age, babe."

In another part of the song, Hilary Duff sings:

"You dim all the lights so you look real wise/As they trace the lines underneath your eyes/And mistake your charm for a cosmic sign/Now, now/ I can't put it on them, it's his best trick/And they're taking the bait just like I did."

The announcement for Hilary Duff's single "Mature" was first made in September, following her signing a deal with Atlantic Records. Apart from her music, the "Lizzie McGuire movie" actress is also set to release a documentary directed by Sam Wrench that "will chronicle Duff’s long-awaited musical return and personal journey, offering an unfiltered vignette into Hilary’s world."

More about Hilary Duff's latest musical venture

Hilary Duff, in her comeback single titled "Mature," also collaborated with songwriter Madison Love, who has previously written for other stars like Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Lady Gaga, Kim Petras, Madison Beer, and many others.

In her recent interview with Vogue, published on November 6, the "Agent Cody Banks" actress explained that music has always been part of her life since releasing her first Christmas-themed album, Santa Claus Lane, back in 2002. She said:

"Making music was a huge risk that I took at such a young age, and it was a huge part of my makeup for the longest time. It was hard to step away from it, but I always knew I would come back whenever the timing felt right.”

In the interview, Hilary Duff also shared that she knew that she would eventually return to music, but it was not until she discussed the idea with her husband, with whom she shares three children, that she was finally dedicated to moving forward with the project. She said:

"I always knew I would be back at some point, but I didn’t have a running note on my phone until I started seriously talking with Matt [Duff’s husband] about what new music might sound like. Now that I have 10 more years of life experience under my belt, I really feel like I have something to say and that I have a safe space to do it.

She further added:

To be 38 and have built a family that looks the way I always dreamed it would, I feel like I can step away and take some time to do this for myself. I’ve had a forward-facing life for such a long time, but I’m ready to connect with people again on a level that feels authentic to who I am now. It feels like a victory lap."

Hilary Duff also revealed the reason for including a butterfly at the end of the music video for "Mature." She explained that the butterfly was a nod to her second album, Metamorphosis, adding that the butterflies hold great significance for her even today.
