On June 18, 2025, Taeil, an ex-member of the famous K-pop group NCT, pleaded guilty to the charges of special quasi-rape of a Chinese tourist back in June 2024. He was not single-handedly involved in this, but two unknown men were also involved in the act, which happened at one of their homes in Bangbae-dong, South Korea.
According to Star News, the two men have also admitted to the crime. New developments in the case revealed that text messages were exchanged between the three men before and after the crime. It is reported that the three men knew each other well, but it is possible that the Chinese tourist was just a stranger.
Through the text messages exchanged between the three men, the prosecution decided that the crime was not unplanned. In one of the texts, the unnamed men mentioned that the woman was a foreigner. A few of the other text messages revealed that the trio discussed changing the GPS location of the taxi so that it would not lead back to the crime scene. The police investigated the CCTV footage for over two months to get to the bottom of it.
Taeil pleaded guilty to the crime
Ex-NCT member Moon Tae-il admitted to perpetrating the crime against the Chinese woman who was a tourist. He pleaded guilty during his first court trial and would probably be sentenced to seven years in prison. However, the prosecutors think that the K-pop singer might have done so to avoid a harsher sentence.
The two men involved in the crime were also sentenced to the same seven-year prison term.
Taeil's legal team fought for a lesser sentence after the singer admitted to his crimes. His legal team said:
"Taeil submitted a statement of self-surrender to the police. He also went through the difficult process of reaching an agreement with the victim, who is Chinese, and even received a letter from the victim stating she did not want further punishment levied."
The prosecutors believed that the ex-NCT member's crime deeply affected the victim, not just physically, but mentally and psychologically as well.
While the final verdict has not been made, Taeil will have to make his appearance in court once again. The final sentence will be made at the Seoul Central District Court’s 26th Criminal Division on July 10, 2025.
