Recording artist Tish Hyman recently had an interaction with state senator Scott Wiener where she brought up the Gold’s Gym controversy. For the uninitiated, Hyman engaged in a war of words with Alexis Black, a trans woman, at the gym. The tiff was about Black being in the locker room used by women. Following the incident, Hyman was no longer welcome in the gym.

In a video posted on her YouTube channel, Tish Hyman requested permission from Wiener as she wanted to ask a question as she said she took a flight to attend the event. The question was:

“As a lesbian woman who was attacked in a woman's locker room at Gold's Gym this week by a self-identifying trans woman with a documented history of domestic violence, I'm deeply concerned about women's safety in our female only spaces. What would you say to women who are seeking assurance that their safety will be protected from men who by California law can self ID as women in women only spaces?”

Responding to Tish Hyman’s question, Scott Wiener said:

“Yeah, so we want I mean everyone to be safe. And we also know that you know we have trans people both men and women who are men and women.”

Her opinions and statements then became heated and someone suggested that Wiener should respond. The senator said he was sorry Hyman had to go through that experience. He then added:

“I think we need to protect the safety of all women and that's incredibly important. And I also know that trans women are also brutalized in this country. So, women and cisgender women are brutalized in this country and we have to protect the safety of all women.”

Tish Hyman said she wasn’t homophobic or transphobic

Tish Hyman then mentioned how Wiener did good work with the bills he had passed previously. However, she noted that more bills need to be opened up and mentioned how millions of American women faced harassment and s*xual assault in locker rooms. She said she was neither transphobic nor homophobic. However, she felt that a lot of the bills he had passed could be dangerous to women and children.

She also said she supported Wiener but people want to know how he planned to ensure women’s safety, not trans women's. Hyman opined that trans women were different. At this point, someone from the audience interrupted her, seemingly upset with her comment. They said:

“Trans women are women.”

Hyman said:

“No, they are not. They are men. I was assaulted.”

Speaking of Alexis Black, whom she referred to as ‘he,’ Tish Hyman said Black broke their wife’s jaw and she had to undergo reconstructive surgery. She told the audience:

“I'm a lesbian. I'm not transphobic and I'm black. So, if there's another black woman in here who wants to tell me how they feel, please join in. But all of you are not. And I don't know who you are, what you are, but I'm a lesbian.”

Tish Hyman said men have been taking advantage of women in places like locker rooms. She also said that women needed to be protected so that they are not r*ped in the bathrooms by men who claim to be women. She then said that she would leave the event because the government was not protecting women enough, but she felt whatever was hapening regarding the situation with trans women was not right.
