Influencer cop Tommy Norman, who worked with the North Little Rock Police Department, announced his retirement from the service. According to The New York Post, the police officer was recently taken into custody for allegedly hitting his wife.

On September 22, he shared a self-recorded video on Instagram. He said the place from where he shot the video was where he began his career 27 years ago, on June 15, 1998. He said at the time he did not think he had what it took to become a police officer and protect the community. Reflecting on his retirement, Tommy Norman said:

“Today is a difficult day for me. After 27 years, I am announcing my retirement from the North Rock Police Department. I feel like that I did not let the community down. I feel like that I did my part. I also feel that the badge did not instil love into me. I instilled love into the badge.”

Tommy Norman said he made mistakes but also owned up to them. He felt that, after what happened in his personal life recently, it was time for him to leave law enforcement. Norman mentioned that he would work for his community in a different capacity. He said:

“This is a very difficult decision. It’s a decision that I made on my own. I will have some restless nights. It’s gonna be different not waking up every morning, putting on my police uniform, getting in that police car, hearing that police radio. I am gonna miss the camaraderie from my fellow brothers and sisters.”

Tommy Norman explains why he wanted to become a police officer

Despite what he would miss from his job, Tommy Norman said he had comfort in knowing that although he would hang up his uniform, he wouldn’t hang up his heart. He said he is motivated to prove himself. He reminded himself that one need not be a police officer to create a difference in the community.

At the beginning of the video, he shared why he wanted to join the service, saying:

“One of the main reasons that I wanted to become a police officer was to give back to my community. And I knew that police officers had such an opportunity to go out and make a difference, to get out of their police cars, to talk to people, to get to know people. And that’s always work for me.”

Tommy Norman also thanked the police department for raising him. He said he had no regrets as the North Rock Police Department allowed him plenty of opportunities to excel in his career. His message to others was:

“To any other police officer out there, whether you just started your career, or you are furthering your career, regardless of what anybody else says, go out and meet people where the are. Get off the main street, go out and meet people where they are.”

He felt that the more time one spent outside their police car, the more change and difference they could make. Tommy Norman said one of his uncles was in the police service, which inspired him. He wanted to make his uncle proud and felt he succeeded in doing it. He said that following the retirement, the next few months would be difficult.
