More about Miguel Uribe Turbay

Miguel Uribe Turbay was a presidential contender from Colombia's conservative opposition, and his demise at the age of 39 worsens the sadness surrounding his family's history.

His mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was murdered in 1991 during a failed rescue operation. Per Reuters, Diana had been abducted in 1990 by the Medellín cartel, led by drug lord Pablo Escobar.

The Colombian politician saw a political ascent, and established himself as a legislator for Democratic Centre party, and a presidential contender noted for his incisive critique of the leftist administration of Colombia's current President Gustavo Petro.

At 25 years of age, Miguel Uribe Turbay was elected to Bogotá's municipal council. He emerged as a strong opposition of Petro, the then-mayor of the Capital, and his policies on management of waste disposal and several other social initiatives.

In the 2022 elections, Turbay headed the senate candidacy for the Democratic Centre with the campaign “Colombia First,” securing a position in the chamber.
