Following months of uncertainty, Toronto police have made an arrest related to the murder of Mohamed Ahmed, the brother of poet and musician Mustafa Ahmed. Mohamed was shot dead over two years ago, and the case attracted a considerable amount of media attention.
On July 25, 2023, Mustafa's brother was shot and killed while sitting in a parked vehicle near Sherbourne and Shuter. Two suspects were identified almost immediately. Law enforcement continued to pursue the lead, and after two years of waiting, there has been progress. Now that the Toronto police have one of the suspects in custody, there is still one suspect at large.
Arrest and charges regarding Mustafa's brother's case

On November 7, 2025, Yasir Mohamed, 27, of Toronto, was arrested by police in connection with the death of Mustafa’s brother, Mohamed Ahmed, CBS News reported the next day. The arrest came more than two years after Ahmed was shot and killed. Immediately after the shooting in 2023, Yasir was placed on a list of the 25 Most Wanted fugitives in Canada, and police began their investigation of his actions.
Police stated that Yasir is faced with a first-degree murder charge, along with several other serious charges: pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, assault with a weapon, possession of a firearm while prohibited, and violating conditions of a recognizance order by 2 counts, which indicates he was supposed to be complying with conditions prescribed by the court when the shooting was committed.
The police stated that they have arrested him and will produce him for a bail hearing soon. Police said they did not have any further particulars about the arrest or additional information regarding the evidence that led to his arrest. The investigation is active, and police are still looking to arrest a second suspect.
