Who attacked Tory Lanez in prison? Convicted murderer identified as suspect

Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was hospitalised after being stabbed 14 times at the California prison where he is serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion in the feet.

According to a report in NPR, the Canadian rapper was allegedly attacked by another inmate at a housing unit at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi around 7:20 am P.T. on May 12, 2025, as indicated by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

The 42-year-old suspected attacker has been identified as Santino Casio and has been serving a life sentence at the prison since 2004, with the possibility of parole for second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, per the CDCR.

However, his crimes didn’t stop even when he was confined in prison. According to a report in the New York Post, in 2008, Casio was sentenced to six more years for assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon, and in 2018, he got two more years for possession and manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner.

Why is Tory Lanez in prison?

According to a report in the BBC, Tory Lanez is currently held in prison for shooting at his friend, Megan Thee Stallion, in the foot after leaving a party at Kylie Jenner's Hollywood Hills home on July 12, 2020.

The report stated that the 32-year-old rapper and Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, got into an argument as they drove away from the event. According to her statement during the 2022 trial, she said that it all started when she mocked Tory Lanez’s musical talents.

She demanded to step out of the car and was shot by the rapper when he demanded that she dance. Megan was hospitalized and underwent surgery. She told the jury that, post the incident, Tory called her and apologized, claiming that he was “just too drunk.” She said that he also offered her $1 million to keep quiet about what happened.

According to a report in the BBC, Lanez is convicted of three charges, including assault using a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in his vehicle, and discharging a firearm negligently.

After Lanez suffered injuries and was rushed to the hospital, his team took to Instagram to inform his fans and followers about the incident. They wrote in a post,

“Tory was stabbed 14 times – including seven wounds to his back, four to his torso, two to the back of his head, and one to the left side of his face. Both of his lungs collapsed, and he was placed on a breathing apparatus.”

The post added,

"He is now breathing on his own. Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits, and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through. He also wants to thank everyone for their continued support."

As of now, none of the authorities have disclosed any information regarding the motive behind the attack on Lanez, which left him seriously injured.
