Rap mogul Sean John Combs, or P. Diddy's, trial is starting on May 5, 2025, but it will not be broadcast on live television. Many may not know that Combs is facing federal criminal charges, and under the 1946 law, which is known as the Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 53, electronic devices are not allowed in court. Despite how Diddy's case is making national headlines and drawing major public interest, the courtroom will remain closed to cameras for both videography and photography.
Today's (May 5) trial session will include a jury selection for Combs, and the testimony will most likely happen next week. The entire trial for Puff Daddy is expected to be completed within a span of eight to 12 weeks.
Sean Combs' trial is different from other trials that were highly publicized and televised, such as Amber Heard and Johnny Depp's case, O.J. Simpson, Ted Bundy, and more. Recall that the nature of the case prevented televising R. Kelly's trial in 2021. Kelly faced similar charges to those of Combs.
A brief recap of Diddy's charges and possible sentences
Sean John Combs has been arrested and detained in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since September last year. He was arrested based on three different charges: s*x trafficking, racketeering, and transportation for prostitution. The rapper was accused of hosting "freak-offs," which were s*x parties involving drugs.
According to the accusations, the women who were involved during these "freak-offs" were allegedly coerced. Some claim to have been filmed without their knowledge and later forced into silence. The rapper denied all of these accusations and maintained that the s*xual activities were consensual.
Furthermore, after these claims, the Feds investigated Combs' home and found around a thousand bottles of baby oil. His attorney defended him and claimed that the oil was a bulk purchase.
Fast-forward to the court day or trial; in case Diddy is found guilty, he may face a life sentence because of the severity of his crimes.
The maximum sentence for racketeer conspiracy is life imprisonment. As for s*x trafficking by force, coercion, or fraud, he may face a minimum of 15 years in prison or a life sentence. Lastly, for his transportation for prostitution, Diddy may get a maximum sentence of 10 years.
