The NFL is reportedly under fire for holding a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk on Thursday, September 9. The NY Times reported that Lambeau Field observed a moment of silence following Kirk's assassination on Wednesday. The news outlet reported that an announcement was made 25 minutes before the match between the Washington Commanders and Green Bay Packers. The announcer noted,
"The National Football League asks that you please join us in a moment of silent reflection following the murder of Charlie Kirk. The NFL condemns all violence in our communities. It will take all of us to stop hate. Thank you.”
However, shortly after the moment of silence for Charlie, Reddit threads emerged criticising the National Football League. Users took to the r/Fauxmoi sub-reddit and claimed that the NFL missed holding silence for the victims of the 9/11 attack. On another subreddit, r/sports, users expressed disappointment for not mentioning the Colorado High School shooting that also incidentally happened on Wednesday.

NFL reportedly under fire for holding moment of silence for Charlie Kirk

The National Football League condemned violence and held a moment of silence after political activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Wednesday. Some Reddit threads emerged, with netizens criticising the Football League for not paying tribute to the tragic 9/11 incident, which claimed approximately 3000 lives. Users on the subreddit, r/sports, were critical of the football association. One user (@josegofaster) wrote,
"9/11 is greater than a single person."
Another user (@drisen) added,
"And it would have made perfect sense if they said "Join us for a moment of silence in remembrance of those who were lost on 9/11" but they chose to say in remembrance of Charlie Kirk."
Another netizen added a suggestion, which would have considered a larger impact of targeted violence. They (@safetyman35) wrote,
"Or if you want to make a more generic message: “On this 24th anniversary of the terrorist attacks against our nation, would you join us for a moment of silence to remember all victims of violence”. This covers the 9/11 victims, school shootings, church shootings, and political violence."
While users claimed that students died during the Colorado High School shooting on Wednesday, news outlets and authorities haven't confirmed the same. ABC News reported that the suspect who had reportedly opened fire in the school, injuring two other students, had reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
Netizens reportedly were critical of the National Football League for not paying tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks, which marked 24 years on Wednesday. While the NFL reportedly didn't have a moment of silence, they posted a collection of tributes for 9.11 by the players and other members on their official website. They also took to their X channel (@nfl) to pay their respect.
