According to CNN, the authorities reported that a dispute broke out involving other individuals outside a local establishment called “Refuge for Mistreated Men”. During the altercation, someone opened fire, striking at least three people. In this shooting, Kevin Mares was shot in the abdomen and killed.

The police have not identified a suspect as of yet, and the motive behind the altercation nd the shooting remains unknown. San Juan’s mayor has indicated that surveillance footage from the area may be used to aid the investigation, as per AP News.

''We're still in the early stages of establishing a motive for the events. We can't rule anything out until the interviews are completed.''

La Perla, a neighborhood bordering the historic Old San Juan district, a popular tourist hotspot, was once notorious for crime and often avoided by police. Its reputation began to shift in 2011, after federal agents conducted a major raid, according to People.

Mares's mother, Sandra, said that she wishes that Bad Bunny would honor him in some way during his concert tonight.
