Tyler Robinson, the suspect charged with the murder of right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk, is facing the death penalty. He had his first court appearance on September 16, 2025, where media outlets reported the 22-year-old looking stone-faced as his charges were read to him.
Hours before Robinson’s appearance in court, Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray, in a press conference, announced that Robinson, a technical student, had been charged with seven counts, including aggravated murder and obstruction of justice. The seven counts are listed as follows:
- Count 1: Aggravated murder
- Count 2: Felony discharge of a firearm
- Count 3: Obstruction of justice - moving a firearm
- Count 4: Obstruction of justice - disposing of clothing
- Count 5: Witness tampering - telling a roommate to delete messages
- Count 6: Witness tampering - telling a roommate to stay quiet
- Count 7: Committing a violent crime when children are present
Gray described Kirk’s murder as an “American tragedy”:
"The murder of Charlie Kirk is an American tragedy. As county attorney, I am charged with bringing justice to those who offend our laws."
He added:
"I do not take this decision lightly, and it is a decision I have made independently as county attorney, based solely on the available evidence and circumstances and nature of the crime,"
“I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I'm going to take it,” Attorney Jeff Gray reveals a text message between Tyler Robinson and his roommate before the shooting

Kirk was fatally shot while speaking on the first leg of his American Comeback tour for his organization Turning Point USA at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. His suspected killer, Tyler Robinson, was arrested after a nationwide manhunt on September 12, 2025.
Authorities revealed that Robinson was arrested based on a tip-off from his father. His parents had allegedly recognized him from the person of interest photo shared by the police. Jeff Gray, in his press conference, revealed a conversation between the suspected shooter and his roommate:
"The roommate received a text message from Robinson, which said, 'Drop what you're doing. Look under my keyboard. The roommate looked under the keyboard and found a note that stated, quote, I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I'm going to take it. Police found a photograph of this note."
Tyler Robinson’s next court appearance is a waiver hearing scheduled for September 29, 2025.
