Walter Scott of The Whispers dies at 81 after brief illness

Walter Scott, the founding member of R&B group The Whispers, passed away on June 26 at the age of 81. The news was announced by a representative of the band, Desirae L. Benson, who wrote in the statement:

"We all are incredibly heartbroken. It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of Walter Scott, beloved member of the legendary R&B group The Whispers. His voice, presence, and contributions helped shape a musical legacy that touched millions. Walter’s impact on the industry and in the hearts of fans will never be forgotten."

Scott’s cause of death was said to be a brief illness, though no exact details have been shared. According to the representative, information about his memorial service has not been announced yet and will be shared later.

Scott was known for his unique voice and powerful stage presence. He sang on some of The Whispers’ biggest hits like “And the Beat Goes On,” “Rock Steady,” and “It’s A Love Thing."


Tributes pour in following the death of Walter Scott

Fans and celebrities have been paying their tributes to Scott following his death.

Radio personality Patty Jackson wrote on X,

"Remembering #WalterScott of the #Whispers he had been sick for a while. He was 82 years old.. Walter and his brother Scotty were a founding members of a musical group that was part of the musical culture for over 60 years🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽"

Steven J. Gaither added on X,

"RIP to Walter Scott of The Whispers. This photo was taken during a Tom Joyner event at WSSU back in 2005z The only occasion I would bust out this picture 😩"

BMB Empower Network shared a statement on X,

"✊🏾🙏🏾🕊️R&B Singer Walter Scott has passed away at the age of 81. He was born on September 23, 1943 in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was a members of the R&B group The Whispers. My sincere condolences to his family members his twin Scotty, friends, and fans. This really hurts. The Whispers, one of the original groups from the 50s. I love all of the them, the band included. Prayers to their entire team."
