The Burning Man festival was held from August 23, 2025, to August 30, 2025, at Black Rock City, a temporary city erected each year within Black Rock Desert in northwestern Pershing County, Nevada. This year, the event faced a number of tragedies, with the 'Orgy Dome' collapsing and an attendee being electrocuted.
However, perhaps the most notable of these events at the festival is the murder investigation currently being undertaken by the police surrounding a man who was found lying in a "pool of blood."
As per a report by the Reno Gazette, police are still searching for the identity of the man. Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen made a statement on September 1, 2025:
"We are specifically looking to identify the white male adult decedent who is between the ages of 35 and 40, approximately 6 feet tall and 200 lbs., with short brown hair and facial hair."
Police are also looking for suspects in the case, with Sheriff Allen stating:
"We are also currently seeking information regarding any suspect identifiers for any person who would commit such a heinous crime against another human being. At this time, no information is too small to disregard, so do not hesitate to contact my office."
He also asked everyone at the festival to remain vigilant:
"Although this act appears to be a singular crime, all participants should always be vigilant of their surroundings and acquaintances. There is no further information available at this time but it will be released as appropriate to provide for communication, while still preserving the integrity of the complicated investigation of a crime in a city which will be gone by the middle of the week."
The body was found between 8 and 8:45 p.m. on I Street, and the sheriff is looking for information from anyone who saw anything between 8 and 9:30 p.m. on August 30, 2025, on I Street in Black Rock City. The Burning Man City is laid out in a semicircle. Streets are named from A to J, with sections of streets named after the sections of a clock.
As per available reporting, this is the first murder to have occurred at the festival, though there have been other deaths in the festival, including a female participant who died due to an asthma attack in 2024.
A brief history of Burning Man
The Burning Man festival was founded in 1986 by Larry Harvey and Jerry James as a continuation of sculptor Mary Grauberger's solstice bonfire gatherings. The festival was first held in Baker Beach, continuing on from Grauberger's gatherings.
The festival's current venue in Black Rock City was originally a separate event created by John Law and Kevin Evans. The two events eventually became one, the Burning Man as it is currently known.
Burning Man became a certified legal event in 1991 and subsequently started gaining in popularity, with the festival adding increased rules and restrictions as the yearly crowd attending the festival grew into thousands.
Burning Man had its highest crowd count in 2019, when it had more than seventy-eight thousand people. The festival, however, has had financial troubles over the years, with the event's organizers having to resort to a fundraiser in 2024 to keep the event ongoing, after its 2024 edition ran at a loss. The festival is expected to draw over seventy thousand people in the 2025 edition.
