Country singer Jesse Welles’ new song Charlie pays tribute to Charlie Kirk, the conservative political activist who was killed at a Turning Point USA rally at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. Kirk’s murder has been condemned by prominent politicians and celebrities alike.
Welles, who recently accepted the Freedom of Speech Award at the Americana Music Awards, lamented the death of the political activist and condemned some comments that seem to celebrate his violent death.
“For all of the bile/The bold talk,” he sings. “The venom/The hate and the lies/No one should be killed/No blood should be spilled,"
Welles explains in the above lyrics that some of Kirk’s controversial political ideologies did not justify the act of violence against him at a peaceful event.
The lyrics continued:
"Charlie shouldn't have died/Well, you can't hate the gun and love the gun that shot yer rival/You can't be kind and wish pain upon a child.”
Welles adds that the right-wing activist shouldn’t have died for his beliefs. He also seems to allude to Kirk being a father of two kids and their pain of losing their father.
“He was an advocate for nonviolence. That is how I’d like to see the people respond,” President Donald Trump encourages peace as he speaks on Charlie Kirk’s murder
The POTUS met with news reporters outside the White House on September 11, 2025. One of the newsmen said to him:
“How do you want your supporters to respond to this? Charlie Kirk was a big advocate of nonviolence and free speech on campus. How do you want your supporters to respond, sir?”
Trump, in his response, advocated for peace and advised his supporters to emulate Kirk’s ideology of nonviolence:
"I think that way. He was. He was an advocate of nonviolence. That’s the way I’d like to see people respond.”
The Utah Police and FBI announced on September 11, 2025, that a search was still ongoing for the shooting suspect and multiple leads were being investigated:
"Search Update – Law Enforcement Personnel continue the search for any potential suspects related to this incident. Multiple leads are currently being investigated, but no suspect is in custody."
