Andrew Witty is a business executive well-known for his contributions to the Pharmaceutical and health sectors. He's an alumnus of Malbank School, formerly known as Nantwich and Acton Grammar School, where he had his primary education before attending the English public research institute, The University of Nottingham. Witty served as the CEO of the US-based health Insurance company UnitedHealth Group from February 2021 to May 13, 2025.

His resignation as CEO of UnitedHealth Group was announced on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, in an official statement released via the organization's social media accounts. The press release explained that the 60-year-old would be leaving based on "personal reasons." It also stated that Andrew Witty would be replaced by the group's ex-CEO, Stephen Helmsey, who held the post for eleven years.

The official statement reads:

"UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) today announced the appointment of Stephen J. Hemsley as its chief executive officer, effective immediately, following Andrew Witty’s decision to step down as CEO for personal reasons. Hemsley, who served as company CEO from 2006-2017, will remain chairman of the company’s Board of Directors, and Witty will serve as a senior adviser to Hemsley."

Following his reappointment as the company's CEO, Hemsley issued a press release thanking Witty for his service to UnitedHealth Group during his four-year tenure.

“We are grateful for Andrew’s stewardship of UnitedHealth Group, especially during some of the most challenging times any company has ever faced." He stated.
He adds, "The Board and I have greatly valued his leadership and compassion as chief executive and as a director and wish him and his family the best."

The Nantwich-born business executive, Andrew Witty, began his career as a trainee at the British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline in 1985. From being a trainee, he was later promoted as the vice president of Glaxo Wellcome Inc., under the parent company GlaxoSmithKline. He was responsible for the positioning of new products and the development and execution of marketing strategies.

In 2000, Witty was appointed as an Economic Adviser to Guangzhou's governor for two years.

After nearly two decades of working at Glaxo, Witty became the president of the Pharmaceutical company in 2003 and eventually succeeded 77-year-old French business mogul Jean-Pierre Ganier as CEO of Glaxo.

Andrew Witty's landmark achievements include his 2013 "UNAIDS-LANCET" program and the "National Health Service's Accelerated Access Collaborative," which he led from 2017 to 2018.

Sir Andrew joined UnitedHealth Group in July 2018, becoming the Chief Executive Officer of its subsidiary company, Optum. He was appointed as the Company's president before being designated as CEO in February 2021.

After resigning from the position of CEO on May 13, Andrew Philip disseminated an official statement that talked about how much of an inspiration UnitedHealth Group had been to him during his four-year leadership role.

“Leading the people of UnitedHealth Group has been a tremendous honor as they work every day to improve the health system, and they will continue to inspire me,” Andrew Witty said.
