Who was Harry Donahue? Beloved KYW Newsradio anchor and Philly sports voice dies at 77

Harry Donahue, known as the Voice of the Owls, has died. The long-time KYW Newsradio anchor passed on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. Harry began his reporting career in 1974 when he joined KYW as a freelance reporter. He was later promoted to a news anchor in 1979 and held that position for decades.

In addition to being a radio news anchor, Harry Donahue was also the commentator of Temple University's football and basketball games on television and radio. According to reports, he served in that role for more than two decades. Harry was also the host of Comcast SportsNet's "Inside Golf" program and worked for fifteen years at the NFL Films.

Donahue served his community by sometimes hosting the preseason games of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Harry Donahue died on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. The anchor was 77 when he passed. KYW Newsradio and the Temple Owls confirmed his passing in a statement.

KYW announced the news on Instagram, sharing that his family broke the news to them.

“We learned of the passing of longtime Morning Drive and sports anchor Harry Donahue from his family on Wednesday, Oct. 29. His family said it came after a bout with cancer.”

They wrote about Harry’s legacy with their establishment.

“Donahue's voice is forever etched in Philadelphia radio history as the figure who not only got people to work with news, traffic and weather, but would also announce all-important school closings on snow days.”

They added:

“Donahue was also a member of Pennsylvania's Sports Hall of Fame and KYW Newsradio's Hall of Fame. He was 77 years old.”

The Temple Owls also wrote a tribute to their voice.

“We're deeply saddened by the passing of longtime Voice of the Owls, Harry Donahue.”

The team praised Harry, describing him as a broadcasting legend.

“A Philadelphia broadcasting legend, his Temple career spanned five decades, bringing the passion and pride of Temple Athletics to fans across the city and beyond.”

They concluded:

“Our love and thoughts go out to the Donahue family and the Owl community. Rest in peace, Harry.”
