The Brazilian singer and actress, Preta Gil died on Sunday, July 20, 2025, in the United States after suffering from complications of rectal cancer, according to MSN. Gil is known for her live albums including Noite Preta Ao Vivo, and Bloco da Preta. She was diagnosed back in 2023 and was undergoing treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Gil was the daughter of the musician and politician, Gilberto Gil. She was married twice in her lifetime. She was first married to the Brazilian actor Otávio Müller; they later separated. Gil was then married to Rodrigo Godoy, a basketball player and personal trainer; they separated in 2023.

After her diagnosis in 2023, Gil underwent chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery in Brazil; however, in 2024, the cancer returned, and it affected her lymph nodes, peritoneum, and ureter. So, in 2025, she came to the US to seek advanced treatment. She was on her way back home when she experienced a medical emergency at the airport and had to be rushed back to the hospital, where she died.
She had two siblings, a sister named Maria Gil and a brother, Pedro Gil. Pedro passed away in 1990. Gil is the first cousin of the singer and musician Moreno Veloso, and the second cousin of the actress, screenwriter, and television presenter, Patrícia Pillar, and the pop singer Luiza Possi. She also has a son, Francisco, from her first marriage with Otávio Müller.
Some of her best works included her albums Sou Como Sou, Preta, and Prêt-à-Porter. She also appeared in several Brazilian TV shows and soap operas, including As Cariocas and Agora É que São Elas.
Other than her musical career, she was also known for being vocal for women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and body positivity. She was also quite open about her cancer journey and shared about it regularly on social media.
She leaves behind her son and her granddaughter, Sol de Maria, 7. Her fans, followers, and fellow artists paid their heartfelt tributes.
