Rapper Trillian is Busta Rhymes' son, and not everyone knows this. Busta received the Rock the Bells Visionary Award at the MTV VMAs on September 7, 2025, and he opened up to PEOPLE Magazine on the red carpet about his career legacy and his son walking in his footsteps.
The Grammy-winning rapper told the news outlet that he was careful not to reveal his relationship with rapper Trillian because he wanted the latter to earn respect in the music industry on his own through hard work:
"I make a conscious effort not to tell people he's my child until after the work. So when we brought him on stage, we just brought him out as a dope, new, hot artist. When he was finished, then I'm giving a speech, and I'm [saying] not only is he my business partner, he's my son, he's a college graduate. He's a Kappa fraternity member. He also still has a regular job."
The I Know What You Want hitmaker added:
"He really, really is committed to the hard work that it takes to succeed. And it's not being given to him. He gotta earn it. And that's what he's doing. And I'm so proud to see that as a dad."
“Next time, Y’all take 35 years to give me one of these,” Busta Rhymes jokes while receiving his first VMA

The Rock the Bells Visionary Award was Busta Rhymes' first MTV VMA Moonman, and the rapper was thrilled about it. Family and friends surrounded him at the event. Three of his children, two nephews and his manager Mona Scott-Young were amongst those who cheered him on at the New York UBS Arena.
In addition to receiving his first Moonman, Busta Rhymes performed a medley of some of his greatest hits, including Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See and Pass the Courvoiser Part 2. Whilst receiving the highly coveted award, Busta Rhymes dressed in a red leather jacket and matching pants, joked about the award’s timing after crediting LL Cool J for inspiring him as a rapper:
"Next time y'all take 35 years to give me one of these.”
The rapper also spoke with PEOPLE about receiving the award:
"It's probably one of the most incredible feelings for several reasons. It's one thing to have a vision when you were a fan, and you were still in single-digit age, and you was being [babysat] 'cause your mom and your dad was busting ass to make sure you had everything you needed, and you fell in love with this thing. And you just thought one day, by the grace of God, that you would get a chance to be a part of this."
