While Game of Thrones ended in 2019, the discussions over the series are not ending anytime soon. With many agreeing that the finale hurt fans more than Ned Stark’s beheading, another talking point that has been discussed over the years is the White Walkers and how they cannot be specified to be a single type of creature.
The White Walkers were a vital part of the story, as everything started with them. While the ending of their arc was not really impressive, and felt absolutely meh, given how long it took to hype them up, it cannot be denied that those were majestic but scary entities.
From fighting dragons to always working in sync, the White Walkers were like a species of their own in Game of Thrones. Let us now explore in detail some reasons that make them as unique as it goes.
5 reasons the White Walkers were unique beings in Game of Thrones
White Walkers affected all dead beings
One of the key points of surprise about the White Walkers was that they could turn any dead creature into a wight. Their powers were not confined to humans and horses, as was revealed when a dead bear came back to life, thanks to the White Walkers.
This demonstrated the extent of their powers, and it was unleashed in full force when the Night King killed Viserion, Daenerys Targaryen's dragon, and brought him back as a wight.
The White Walkers communicated between them in a unique way
There was never shown to be any communication between the White Walkers, but that did not keep them from performing in sync. They were always together, doing the same things and never falling out of line.
While this is a trait that zombies also show, given how the origin of the White Walkers are different from zombies, this makes the communication process unique, with fans speculating if they are operating on telepathy.
The White Walkers could only be killed with Valyrian steel or dragon glass
Unlike zombies or creatures of that category, the White Walkers could not be killed with a bullet or arrow to their head. Only when attacked with weapons made of dragonglass or Valyrian steel could they be defeated.
Apart from these two materials, they seemed to be resistant to all other forms of attacks and weapons, and even the dragons could not destroy them completely.
The wights could survive under water
Another fascinating thing about the wights was that though they could not swim with their rotting flesh and frail bones, they did not pose the risk of drowning either. Since they did not need oxygen to survive, it was easy for them to be alive (or whatever these undead creatures’ living status was) without breathing.
This means that they could just walk under the water, which was, of course, a slow process, but nevertheless would help them to succeed in their mission of killing the living beings.
White Walkers were really good with javelins
Another curious thing about the White Walkers was how good they were with javelins. The Night King seemed to be a seasoned one who really excelled at throwing it, and it seemed that they probably had some kind of practice to reach this level of excellence.
However, no such backstory was provided regarding their amazing javelin throwing abilities, and that adds another point to the list of their unique characteristics.
Game of Thrones can be streamed on Max.
