The following article contains spoilers.
Athena decides to go back to work in 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 17
In the previous 9-1-1 episode, as Athena finally came to terms with the reality of losing Bobby, she is shown to be continuing to build the dream house that she and Bobby had thought of building together. After discussing the same with her kids, she tells them that she has another update to share with them.
The kids think that she will talk about selling the house, which would have been an understandable decision, but she talks about going back to work. The kids are not really surprised at this either because they know their mother and how it will not be possible for her to simply stay at home, despite the tragedy that has hit them.
The 118 team deals with a major case in 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 17
While Bobby is no longer with the team, 9-1-1 Season 8 is keeping him alive through the flashbacks, as the creators had promised. In episode 17 also, the viewers see Buck thinking about Bobby sitting at the same table they all used to sit together as Bobby told them how the whole team was a family.
The transition from the flashback to the present hits even harder as the realization of Bobby never coming back hits Buck once again. While he is dealing with his grief in his own way, the team learns that something has happened, which is turning water into fire and thus creating chaos.
The team comes together and gets to work as Captain Gerrard figures out how they can have access to water that isn't flammable. Chimney, Hen, and Buck all try to find the nearest hydrant and get water from there as Maddie explains that it is the methane in the water that is causing the fire as some hydrants draw water from under the ground.
The crisis is massive enough as multiple occurrences of fire breaking out happen throughout the city. It also becomes clear that while Captain Gerrard is taking the lead and doing his job well, he is also ready to pass on his responsibilities to Hen, who, by the end of the episode makes the shocking revelation of choosing to not undertake the position of the captain.
9-1-1 can be streamed on Hulu.
