9-1-1 season eight already delivered its shocker with the death of beloved LAFD Station 118 Captain Bobby Nash, played by actor Peter Krause. Now with the future of 9-1-1 hanging in the balance, there's a vacuum of authority in the 118, and Bobby Nash's successor seems to be elusive.
Such was the force and magnitude of Nash's leadership on 9-1-1, and for a while, it seemed as if the show couldn't successfully continue into the upcoming ninth season without him. However, now that the worst is over, the ABC first-responder show would do good to name its new Captain.
Here's everything that we know.
9-1-1 season 8: What makes Chimney a better successor to Nash?
Things on the surface would point to Hen being the obvious successor to Nash in the 118. She was previously entrusted by Nash to function as the acting captain and even took charge of the 118 right after Vincent Gerrard was unable to serve. Despite her apparent status as the next in line for captaincy, Hen's actual character arc wouldn't be served in a fulfilling manner if she were to become the next captain.
The reasons behind this include the fact that she has been largely missing from the action in the present season of 9-1-1. There's also the fact that Hen aspired to be a doctor throughout seasons three to six of the ABC show, before she gave up on her medical studies to continue as a firefighter and a paramedic.
Chimney, on the other hand, would be a remarkably adept candidate to be the next captain of 118 on 9-1-1. For starters, he has been a part of the unit for almost twenty years, during which time he has gained considerable experience. He has been rendering his services ever since he first appeared on the show back in 2005 when Gerard was running things.
Moreover, despite being labelled as the comic relief for most of the seasons, there's no denying the fact that Chimney possesses the rare ability to be calm under stress and is able to maintain a clear head when it comes to dealing with unexpected adversities. It goes without saying that these skills would catapult him to great fame as the next captain of 118.
Showrunner opens up about Peter Krause's exit from 9-1-1
Showrunner Tim Minear sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for an exclusive interview during which he spoke at length about Bobby Nash's death on the show and Krause's subsequent exit. When asked about whose decision it was to kill off Nash, Minear related:
"I would say it was our (collective) decision, but it was my decision because I felt like creatively, if the show became too inert, it would just die of inertia, right? So I felt like it just needed to happen. Otherwise, the next time I turn over a cruise ship, or land a plane on the freeway, or take a city out with a tsunami, you’re just going to be like, 'Oh, everyone’s going to be fine.' So it was time for there to be some real tragic fallout from a story."
9-1-1 airs new episodes exclusively on ABC.
