9-1-1 Season 8 went fully out and delivered blows to fans one after the other. From Eddie's move to Texas to Maddie's kidnapping and throat-slitting, the show left no stone unturned in throwing challenges along its characters' ways.
However, things took a tragic turn with Captain Bobby Nash's shocking death, after he was infected with a lethal virus and sacrificed himself for Chimney.
While fans are still not happy with Bobby's tragic death, the show must go on, and the remaining 118 are coping with this loss, with Chimney now taking the captain's seat for Season 9.
With Bobby's death, fans were hoping to see a fan-favorite romance on-screen between Buck and Eddie (Buddie). While the two firefighters are strictly shown as friends, fans are rooting for them ever since Buck came out as bisexual.
However, the Season 8 finale saw Buck move out of Eddie's apartment, and all the plans for a 9-1-1 Buddie romance seem far-fetched now.
More on this in our story.
9-1-1 hinted at Buddie's romance, only to make no progress in the Season 8 finale
While Buddie was a 9-1-1 fan fantasy since Buck came out as bisexual, it became a reality in Season 8.
After Eddie's move to Texas to stay close to Christopher, Buck was having a hard time adjusting to his new life without his friend, and Bobby's untimely death just added to that misery. While the two stayed connected on the phone through video calls, it was just not the same.
However, a particular scene between Buck and his ex-boyfriend Tommy changed their equation and (kind of) made Buddie canon. After Tommy and Buck spent the night at the former's new apartment (Eddie's old apartment), Buck assumed this was a one-time thing.
However, he was surprised when Tommy asked him out for dinner, saying that they could likely start a relationship now because Eddie is out of the picture. Buck was taken aback after he realized that Tommy thinks he has feelings for Eddie. While his reaction clearly suggests he has feelings for Eddie, he did not accept them.
This scene instilled hope among fans, and it looked like the 9-1-1 Season 8 finale might finally give us a Buddie romance.
However, that was not the case. While Eddie decided to stay in LA, Buck moved out of his apartment, thwarting any plans for them to stay together with Chris like a family. In addition, Eddie has never verbalized any romantic feelings for Buck.
Oliver Stark and Ryan Guzman do not think 9-1-1 should tap into Buddie's romance just yet
While 9-1-1 fans are waiting for Buddie romance to happen, Oliver Stark (Buck) and Ryan Guzman (Eddie) have not shown keen interest in adapting this storyline.
Talking to Deadline, Stark discussed his feelings about the Buddie storyline, and he does not think that 9-1-1 should tap into it only because of fans' wishes:
“What I will say is that if the story ever goes in that direction, I don’t think the way to do it is purely to give in to fans. I hope, if it goes there, it’s done because that’s the right story to tell and that’s the right progression for the characters.”
Guzman seems to echo his co-star's views on Buddie's romance and thinks that their characters are better off as friends for now (via Deadline):
“I think we have something so genuine with what we’ve already established. And I think Oliver’s character has said it multiple times. It’s like, why can’t we just be friends, brothers? I think, right now, it stands as it is. I completely understand where fans are gaining that from, and they’ve created their own lore. I see so many different things. I see renditions of the show where it’s all of us like friends, characters, and stuff. I love it. They’re so adamant on their version of 9-1-1.”
While Stark and Guzman's comments seem to suggest 9-1-1 is not keen on adapting Buddie romance, it remains to be seen how their story will progress in Season 9 now that Eddie is back in LA.
