Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is set to feature the return of one major Marvel Netflix hero, the Private Investigator (PI) Jessica Jones. Played by actress Krysten Ritter, the character's return was officially confirmed at Disney's upfront presentation on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. This would mark the return of Jessica in the MCU after Jessica Jones Season 3, which was released in 2019.
Honestly, I am happy to see the return of Krysten Ritter in the role of the brash alcoholic PI. It gives me hope that we'll get a second season of The Defenders, which is a team-up series between her, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. While it should be noted that Luke Cage and Iron Fist's return is not confirmed, all signs point towards a return of the Defenders in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.
Krysten Ritter's Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 return as Jessica Jones explained:
As stated before, Disney held its Upfront presentation on May 13, 2025, in New York. In that presentation, a lot of details regarding upcoming Disney projects were revealed, and that included Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. While there have been rumors circulating on the internet and Ritter offered subtle hints, here and there, it wasn't until this Tuesday that her return was confirmed officially.
Ritter, expressing happiness in returning for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, said this at the event:
“It’s so great to be back, returning to Jessica after three seasons and ‘The Defenders’ and now joining the MCU. I’m so excited to bring back this iconic character, and without giving too much away, there is much more in store for Jessica Jones. This is going to be an incredible season!”
Furthermore, previous statements by Brad Winderbaum and Dario Scardapane, the showrunner of Born Again Seasons 1 and 2, also hinted at the return of Jessica Jones and the rest of the Defenders.
Brad Winderbaum hinted at the possibility of the Defenders returning in the future:
Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, gave several interviews to different outlets. One such interview was with Entertainment Weekly, which was published on February 19, 2025. When asked about the possible return of the other Netflix Marvel heroes like Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, Winderbaum responded:
“I can't say much, but I'll tell you that it's so exciting to be able to play in that sandbox. Obviously we don't have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book. If you can draw it, you can do it. It's dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring."
Now that the cat is out of the bag, we can ascertain that Marvel Studios is definitely thinking of incorporating the other two The Defenders heroes into Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 as well. Showrunner Dario Scardapane echoed similar sentiments in an Entertainment Weekly interview.
Dario Scardapane was Cagey (pun intended) about The Defenders in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2:
Scardapane sat down for an interview on April 18, 2025, which is three days after the release of the season 1 finale. In that interview, the showrunner touched upon the season 1 finale that saw Kingpin emerge victorious because he successfully banned vigilantes as the mayor, and as a crime boss, he had his opponent imprisoned in cages.
But Matt manages to be on the run, and he forms an army in the closing minutes of the season 1 finale. Upon hearing the word "army", I expected to see The Defenders, but the characters who are a part of Daredevil's army for now are Karen, Josie, Detective Angie Kim, the investigator for Matt's firm, Cherry, and some unnamed police officers.
The Entertainment Weekly journalist asked Scardapane about the lack of Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones. The exact question was:
"With this final scene that we get with Matt and everybody in Josie's, people have been gravitating toward the line that he says about needing to assemble an army to take down Fisk. The first thing that pops into our heads is Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Danny Rand. Are those characters in your head as you map out season 2 and the future of Daredevil?"
To this question, the showrunner had the following response:
"Without giving too much away...when you're working in what I would call the Hell's Kitchen corner of the MCU, those iconic characters are always in your mind. The thing is that — and this is kind of hard, I'm trying to thread a needle here — you want to bring in people and relationships and past figures in Matt's life because they help the story, particularly in terms of a story where Fisk has taken over the city. And there is a resistance and a rebellion, so to speak, rising. So there's going to be people, vigilantes, superheroes that are involved in that. There has to be because this is happening to their city."
"That said, you also want to create a completely organic story for that. So who comes in and why has to be beyond anything earned. So the easiest answer to your question is, yes, those characters that you just listed off are absolutely in my head and everybody's head as we're working. How that manifests itself is both really tricky writing-wise and a pretty closely guarded secret at this point. So I'm being intentionally cagey, but I'm also saying, 'Hell yeah!' in terms of it's something we're thinking about."
Now that Jessica Jones is officially in Born Again Season 2, it is safe to assume that Luke Cage and Danny Rand's involvement in the MCU might be confirmed soon as well.
