MGM+’s The Westies has piqued the audience’s interest even before premiere, as the show keeps adding acclaimed actors to its ensemble. The creators had already announced four cast members: Titus Welliver, JK Simmons, Tom Brittney, and Jessica Frances Dukes.

As per a Variety exclusive, Sarah Bolger and Stanley Morgan are the latest actors to join the cast. Set in the 1980s, the show revolves around the titular criminal gang, who try to maintain control over New York City despite being threatened by the Italian Mafia.

The Westies is being created by Chris Brancato and Michael Panes. Here are all the updates you need about Sarah Bolger and Stanley Morgan’s casting in the show.

Sarah Bolger and Stanley Morgan join The Westies

Stanley Morgan will play the character of Mickey Flanagan, a loyal member of the gang. He is a close aide of Jimmy Roarke, played by Tom Brittney, but his impulsiveness often causes trouble for the people around him. Morgan is known for his roles in Sexy Beast, The Serpent Queen, and The Sandman.

Sarah Bolger is going to star as Bridget Walsh, Jimmy’s girlfriend. She is an IRA agent who wants to end British influence in Ireland. Bolger is an Irish actress who is recognized for playing Princess Mary Tudor in The Tudors and Jade in Into the Badlands. The official synopsis of The Westies reads:

“The series is set in the early 1980s when the construction of the Jacob Javitz Convention Center on the Westies’ home turf in Hell’s Kitchen promises a financial windfall. Despite being outnumbered fifty-to-one by the Five Families of the Italian Mafia, the Westies’ legendary brutality and cunning have given them the leverage necessary to share the spoils through a fragile détente.”

The synopsis adds:

“But internal conflict between the brash younger generation and the old-school leadership threatens to set a match to this powder keg, which will sweep the Westies into the FBI’s ever-deepening investigation into the Italian mafia.”

The show will premiere on MGM+, but its release date has not been announced yet. JK Simmons stars as Eamon Sweeney, the head of the gang; Jessica Frances Dukes plays Birdie Polk, an FBI agent; and Tom Brittney portrays James “Jimmy” Roarke, leader of the younger generation of the crime syndicate.

Bosch and Bosch: Legacy star Titus Welliver portrays NYPD officer Glenn Keenan, who is torn between his duty and his closeness with the gang members. Welliver talked about his character in an interview with Collider and revealed how it would be different from his previous work:

“He’s no Harry Bosch. But believe me, this guy is a Vietnam War veteran. He’s a beat cop. He still walks the streets, but he’s corrupt. His moral compass has been completely compromised.”

He added:

“Somebody said to me, ‘Do you really want to do another cop?’ Well, if I could let you read the script, you would realize why. This is a very, very complex and deeply nuanced character... But this is a very, very dark world.”
