All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 was all about warmth, companssion and hope in difficult times. This feel-good dramedy series follows a young Yorkshire vet, James, who joins Skeldale House at Darrowby. Siegfried Farnon, a senior vet, runs the Skeldale House, while Mrs. Audrey Hall is the kind and dedicated housekeeper without whom the clinic would be a complete mess.
As James starts working as a vet in this rural clinic, he gets closer to the local people, the farmers, and most importantly, the animals. He falls in love with a local farmer's daughter, Helen, and the couple gets married by the end of Season 3. Helen gives birth to a baby boy, Jimmy. However, Jimmy soon heads to the war front and joins the RAF.

All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 recap: What happened to James Herriot?
All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 begins around the spring of 1941. A tumultuous time with the ongoing Second World War. While Siegfried focuses on the practice, Mrs Hall, Helen, and others contribute to the war efforts. Elsewhere, Mrs Hall volunteers to be a blackout warden. Mrs. Pumphrey offers her mansion for a recovery hospital.
Meanwhile, James trains as a war pilot, but unfortunately, he collpases mid training. When he's taken to the infirmary, the doctors find out that he has brucellosis. His wing commander informs him that he's not fit to fly. Soon, he's sent back home to continue working as a vet. When James arrives at Skeldale, everyone welcomes him.
In Season 5, the Skeldale House grows busier than ever, and Siegfried and team handle each case with ease, although not without a few hiccups. Meanwhile, Tristan, Siegfried's brother, returns, and he initially refuses to join the Skeldale House. On the other hand, the new parents, James and Helen, struggle as well with new responsibilities.
All Creatures Great and Small Season 5: Is Richard leaving?
Yes, Richard leaves for London. Turns out he nails his exams and secures an outstanding distinction. Siegfried offers him a position at Skeldale, but eventually Siegfried advises Richard to explore newer opportunities. Since Richard won the Warner Prize, he's the recipient of a research position in London. In the end, he finally accepts the research position, and Siegfried assures him that Skeldale will always be his home.
Do Siefried and Tristan reunite by the end of All Creatures Great and Small Season 5?
Even though the Farnons have had differences in the past, by the end of the season, they mend their relationship. In Episode 6, they have a heartfelt conversation. Siegfried reveals that he wanted to spend more time with Tristan. Tristan says that he wants the same as well and assures him that he'll stop going to the pubs.
All Creatures Great and Small Season 5: Is Mrs. Hall's son alive?
In the Christmas special episode of All Creatures Great and Small Season 5, devastating news shakes things up. Turns out, Mrs. Hall's son Edward was on a ship that had been sunk in the Pacific. Tristan brings the newspaper the next morning, and it says that half of the crew of the ship has managed to survive.
For the next two weeks, Mrs. Hall worries about her son. Others try to console her, but she only finds solace caring for an injured fox. When Edward's Christmas card arrives, Mrs. Hall sees a ray of hope, but it gets shattered when she realizes that it was sent weeks before the attack.
On Christmas morning, Mrs. Hall finally receives a call from Edward. Turns out, he's safe but injured. Thus, Edward, Mrs. Hall's son, survives in the end.
Season 5 is available to stream on PBS Passport. Season 6 will release on January 11, 2026, and new episodes will drop every Sunday. It will take a three-year leap and will focus on the events from May 1945. With the war nearly over, Skeldale House is ready for new adventures. Apart from that, the Herriots have welcomed a daughter too, and Jimmy's a big brother who is James' mini assistant.
