If you loved watching Detective Renée Ballard solving cold cases in Prime Video's Ballard, the good news is that the series will return for Season 2. Yes, you read that right. Actress Maggie Q will reprise her role as the LAPD detective for more action and drama.
The show succeeded in expanding the Bosch universe, and within three months of the premiere, Prime Video decided to move forward with Ballard Season 2. Per Deadline, several factors played a role in contributing to the show's renewal, like the California Film Commission awarding the show a $14.84 million tax credit.
With the future of the Prime Video series being confirmed, cast members, along with Maggie Q, were informed about the renewal update. Although exact details about the Season 2 plot are yet to be revealed, viewers can expect more complicated cold cases and deeper narratives into the lives of the characters.
Ballard Season 2 confirmed by Prime Video after Season 1's success
As of now, Prime Video has only shared the news of Ballard's renewal, and a confirmed release date is expected to be announced soon. The first chapter ended with several big questions that can be explored in Season 2 with the return of the detective and her team, which operates at the basement level of the LAPD.
The dynamics within the Cold Case Unit will likely change, and the arrival of new characters could lead to more conflicts and drama. Fans of the Bosch universe can also look forward to potential crossovers with characters from Bosch: Legacy, as the stories are interconnected in the universe.
Earlier in July, Maggie Q was asked about the future of her show, to which she mentioned that the industry is now "barely recognizable" to her and that "shows are so expendable". She said:
"They can throw out a show in two seconds, and it doesn’t make a ton of difference that whole worlds and livelihoods are at stake."
The Ballard actress continued:
"Studios always have options. But we have a writers room, and they’ve been writing away. The arc for the second season is very exciting."
Despite the writers working on a Season 2 storyline, Maggie Q stressed that the fate was still uncertain. This way, Q prepared herself to accept the reality. But now, her show is confirmed to return for another chapter.

Revisiting the ending of Balllard Season 1 on Prime Video

Season 1 concludes with a surprising turn of events as Detective Renée is arrested for the murder of Robert Olivas, a fellow officer whom she had previously accused. In a dramatic scene, Renée is on a beachside vacation with her team at Malibu’s Paradise Cove when police cars pull in to arrest her.
Prior to this, Olivas was shot and killed with Ballard’s police gun. She had a loud argument with him before his death, which makes her the primary suspect in the crime. The ending suggests that someone powerful is pulling the strings with an aim to trouble the detective and hide a larger conspiracy behind it.
