The news of MGM+ adapting the American Hostage podcast into an all-new series came out earlier this year. It will feature Jon Hamm as the main character, which means he's set to reprise his role, as he also starred in the 2022 podcast version.
And now, Deadline has confirmed that actor Jonathan Tucker has also joined the cast of the American Hostage TV series in a major recurring role. The outlet has also reported that Tucker will be seen playing FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally.
McNally will work with the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit, and what makes him an engaging character is the agent's skills and his quirky, unusual behavior. Tucker has played various roles in TV series and films, with the most famous character being Jay Kulina on the DirecTV drama series Kingdom.
Reports on MGM eyeing a new adaptation of the podcast emerged in 2023, and now it's finally confirmed. The president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, Katherine Pope, said:
"We couldn’t be more grateful to be making this show with our valued partners – MGM+, Shawn Ryan, Eileen Myers and Jon Hamm."
The series will be a "psychological thriller" taking place in the 1970s and based on a true story. The narrative kicks off when a radio reporter finds himself in a hostage situation.
Actor Jonathan Tucker joins the American Hostage TV series as FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally
American Hostage is characterized as a thriller with psychological elements, set in the 1970s and inspired by actual events. The story revolves around Fred Heckman (played by Hamm), a high-ranking and well-liked radio reporter in Indianapolis.
Heckman is caught in the middle of a hostage situation when a man named Tony Kiritsis demands that he be interviewed live on Heckman’s popular show. The series promises to explore that intense, precarious, high-stakes struggle while Heckman tries to navigate the life-or-death scenario without letting the situation spiral out of control.
With Hamm playing the main character, Fred, he's joined by Jonathan Tucker as an FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally. While a detailed description of McNally's life and professional journey remains under wraps, it's possible that he will play a key role during the hostage situation.
As mentioned before, Tucker will appear in a recurring role, which again hints that his FBI agent isn't just working under a unit, but also serving as a key player in controlling the case. This series will be an anthology series, which means it will tell a different story each season, and this first season will tell the story of the Heckman-Kiritsis incident.
MGM+, the primary company that owns this series, has ordered eight episodes, and production will start this fall in Winnipeg, Canada. The production of American Hostage is handled by Sony Pictures Television, and it's co-created executive executive-produced by Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers, along with others.
The head of MGM+, Michael Wright said:
"The combination of prolific producers Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers, a singular talent like Jon Hamm, and our partners at Sony Pictures Television, is a match made in MGM+ heaven."
Wright also explained that the American Hostage is a "fascinating story about real people" who face dangerous situations in life. And Hamm playing the main character is one of the best parts of the project.
