Netflix’s new viewership data might be a good push to make American Primeval Season 2 a reality. The Netflix western drama is a fictional tale set during a real and tragic event in American history: the Utah War. It focuses on the clashes between the LDS church and other cultures and religions around the Utah region.
According to a recent report by Netflix, the Mark L. Smith-written series, with just six episodes, became one of the most-watched shows, landing in the 11th spot with 47M views, making it one of the top shows on Netflix in the first half of 2025.
The audience loved the series and are sure to want more. This new report might have made the case stronger for Netflix to consider green-lighting the series for another season.
More on this in our story.
American Primeval Season 2 gets a new push as season 1 becomes a top show on Netflix
Season 1 of American Primeval narrates a fictional tale about a mother and son, escaping their tragic reality and finding a new family on their journey. While it's a fictional tale, it brings forth the tragic reality of the mid-19th-century Utah region, where brutal clashes took place when settlers tried to take the land from the people who were already living there.
The ending of season 1 left only a handful of characters standing, as most of them died in the brutal clashes and conflicts. However, it didn’t stop fans from asking for another season of the gritty tale as it soared and topped multiple charts after its premiere in January 2025. Added to that, the western drama series is among the most-watched Netflix shows, with 45M views.
Therefore, with fans wanting another season, coupled with the show's record-breaking views, American Primeval Season 2 can become a reality.
Director Peter Berg talks about American Primeval Season 2
While Netflix hasn’t green-lit American Primeval Season 2 yet, the director and one of the producers of the drama series are on board with the fans and are ready to work on season 2. During an interview with Esquire, he stated:
"Fans are calling for season 2, and at the same time they’re saying, ‘Well, how could you possibly do a season 2, because everybody’s dead?’ And if you wait a year to do season 2, those kids that survive are going to all go through puberty and be unrecognizable. So we’re figuring that out now. But we definitely want to do a season 2."
As mentioned, there were not many characters left after the finale of season 1, but Berg still thinks they could use the characters who were alive for American Primeval Season 2. While talking to Decider, he said:
"You know, after we wrapped and I looked at all the actors — the ones that were still alive — I felt such affection for them. And I do think there are many ways that we could go."
While waiting for the confirmation of American Primeval Season 2, you can binge-watch all six episodes of season 1 available on Netflix.
