Tony Gilroy developed the Star Wars prequel series Andor, a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which primarily focuses on the character of Cassian Andor. As per the storyline, he is a former robber who becomes a rebel agent and looks into the broader formation of the Rebel Alliance against the Galactic Empire.

Andor was primarily filmed in the United Kingdom and the first season premiered in 2022, and the second season, wrapped up in 2025.

The showrunner of Andor recently revealed a major shift in the Star Wars canon in one of the interviews on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast. This particular version alters the timeframe and character backgrounds, adding nuance to the narrative.

More about the Andor showrunner and the new canon change

Cassian Andor, a Rebel operative fighting the Empire, is the subject of the Star Wars television series Andor. Compared to many other Star Wars narratives, the show takes a more somber and realistic approach to examining the early years of the Rebel Alliance.

Andor's showrunner, Tony Gilroy, has revealed a major change to the canon, or original Star Wars narrative, and this particular change has an impact on how the Jedi and the Force are portrayed in the Star Wars universe.

In an interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Tony Gilroy stated that Star Wars may revert to a tiered canon structure, in which not all stories are equally important, and he further added,

“Lucasfilm is the Vatican and there's like, a Curia. There are, I don’t know all the levels, there’s eight-ten levels of canonical material, all the way down to obscure fan-fiction. And there’s a guy, there’s Pablo Hidalgo who’s the guy who has been there, the librarian of this thing for a very long time.”

A tiered canon, with films at the top and supplementary works at the bottom, was abandoned when Disney acquired Lucasfilm. Gilroy does, however, raise the possibility that this idea will reappear in Star Wars.

According to Gilroy, the purpose of this alteration is to broaden the scope of Star Wars stories by enabling characters to pursue justice. This would be done via bravery and persistence rather than magical skills.

It makes the story more realistic and relevant by emphasizing the political struggles and individual actions that drive the galaxy's conflict.

Tony Gilroy, known for writing and directing blockbusters such as Michael Clayton and The Bourne Legacy, has extensive Hollywood expertise. He was a good choice to lead this new chapter in the Star Wars franchise. This is primarily because of his experience with complex characters and political thrillers, which complement Andor's tone.
