The first few episodes of Vince Gilligan's latest creation, Pluribus, have been released recently, and viewers are buzzing with opinions and thoughts about the show. While there are several kinds of discussions about the Apple TV+ show, one of the most interesting discussions that is taking place suggests that the show might actually be a satire on AI and the ongoing craze with apps depending on artificial intelligence.
While this might seem outlandish at first, discussions on X and Reddit have shown many users making some really valid points, along with the fact that the show's end credits feature a bizarre disclaimer:
"This show was made by humans."
Pluribus follows the story of a universe where everyone is afflicted with a wave of forced happiness, and only a select few people have managed to escape it. This includes the show's protagonist, Carol, who suddenly finds herself on a quest to save people from... happiness, apparently.
The show's official description reads,
"The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness."
So, this raises the question - What does all of this have to do with AI?

Viewers across X and Reddit are convinced that Pluribus is actually about AI
With the first few episodes of Pluribus now streaming, viewers have many opinions and thoughts about the show. However, one of the most interesting takes that people have shared recently is that the show may actually be a satire about the surge in dependence on AI.
While some viewers declared that Pluribus was a very obviously anti-AI show, others have dived deep into how Vince Gilligan cleverly captures the frustration of those who still use critical thinking in the age of AI.
"Vince Gilligan perfectly captured how maddening it feels to watch everyone around you surrender to AI, while they act like you're the crazy one for having critical thinking skills."
"Pluribus kind of encapsulates how it feels that everyone around you is enthusiastically using AI/ChatGBT - why are u not thinking for yourself why are you excited to not have your own thoughts and opinions"
There have been some observations that Hive Mind on the show is an analogy for those who have been sucked into the AI universe, and that Carol represents those who still believe in the idea of using critical thinking.
Aside from these observations, it is also no secret that Vince Gilligan is not a fan of AI. In fact, on more than one occasion, the Breaking Bad creator has openly spoken about his dislike of the same. In an interview with Variety, he frankly said that he hated AI and called it "horsesh*t."
In conversation with Rolling Stone, Gilligan confessed,
"If you really want to wake me in a cold sweat at three in the morning, AI is the stick to poke me with."
While these speculations are quite convincing, it is also worth noting that Pluribus was written almost 10 years ago, when ChatGPT and other similar platforms had not even been released into the market for public use. Therefore, there is a good chance that all of these connections might just be coincidences. However, the mystery will only unfold after the rest of the season is released.
Pluribus is available to stream on Apple TV+, with new episodes releasing every Friday. So far, three episodes are available to stream, with the latest one having been released on November 14th.
