Betrayal: Under His Eyes – How did a hidden camera reveal Dr. Justin Rutherford’s terrifying secrets? Details explored 

ABC News Studios' recently released three-part docuseries Betrayal: Under His Eyes recounts the harrowing case of 2021, when a hidden camera revealed a string of Dr. Justin Rutherford’s sinister and dark crimes against his stepson, Tyler VanScyoc.

Stacey Rutherford believed that she was living the American dream with her new husband, Dr. Justin Rutherford, and her son in a beautiful Pennsylvania home. However, the summer of 2021 shattered her American dream when her stepson, Tyler, revealed that Dr. Justin Rutherford had been s*xually assaulting him since age 11.

This led to Dr. Justin Rutherford's imprisonment on the grounds of s*xually assaulting his stepson & another minor, and orchestrating a separate murder-for-hire plot. Following the revelation of his crimes, Justin's medical license was also canceled, and he is currently serving his prison sentence.

Betrayal: Under His Eyes- How did a hidden camera end Stacey Rutherford's 'perfect' marriage with Dr. Justin Rutherford?

Betrayal: Under His Eyes is a true crime docuseries about Stacey's realization that her picture-perfect marriage with Dr. Justin Rutherford was just a sham, and she had married a monster. When the single mother met Dr. Justin, their romance soon took flight, which eventually led to the 'perfect' marriage and a beautiful home with Stacey's son, Tyler VanScyoc. However, the discovery of a hidden camera inside Tyler's bathroom unmasked Dr. Justin Rutherford's dark secrets and his years of s*xual assault of Tyler and a fellow young man.

In the summer of 2021, one of Tyler’s friends discovered a hidden camera in Rutherford’s family bathroom, revealing Dr. Justin Rutherford’s disturbing and sinister secrets. According to an ABC report, the hidden camera was disguised as a phone charger, which probably became the perfect cover for Dr. Justin Rutherford. After Tyler's friend took the camera to his parents, they contacted the police and found a string of disturbing evidence on the device.

As Chief Jeffrey Smith of the Amity Township Police Department revealed in Betrayal: Under His Eyes:

''There were thousands of images of people showering, using the bathroom, changing in and out of clothing.''

However, this was just the beginning of a harrowing family secret, which ended Stacey's marriage to Dr. Justin Rutherford.

The hidden camera in the Rutherfords' home was just the preview of a sinister crime. Betrayal: Under His Eyes further reveals how the hidden camera motivated Tyler to speak up against the s*xual molestation he has been facing since the age of 11, at the hands of his stepfather, Dr. Justin Rutherford.

This set off a string of more revelations, and one of Tyler's friends also came forward and revealed how Dr. Justin Rutherford had also s*xually assaulted him when he came for a sleepover at Rutherford's house. This discovery and Tyler's years of s*xual abuse were enough for the police to build a case against Dr. Justin Rutherford, and he was arrested at Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

However, his thirst for crime did not end here, as he orchestrated Tyler's murder from inside the jail while awaiting his trial. As seen in Betrayal: Under His Eyes, Justin wrote letters to a close friend from inside the prison, to silence the key witness of his case, ie, his stepson.

As told by Stacey Rutherford to ABC News:

"The person was to wait in our driveway and, when Tyler got off work, they were to kill him painlessly. And then he wanted him either buried in a forest or burned in a barrel.''

However, the Rutherford family and the police learned about Justin's plans, and he was sentenced to 26 years and 10 months to 70 years, with 12 years of special probation in prison, in February 2024.

Betrayal: Under His Eyes is now streaming on Hulu.
