Beyond the Bar Episode 3 recap: Min-guk almost gets hit by a delivery van
The case in Episode 3 of Beyond the Bar depicts a child named Min-guk, finding himself in front of a delivery van, driven by Deok-ho, who has consumed more than the required amount of Irish coffee, which contains alcohol. While he hit the brakes on time and does not technically hit Min-guk, he is still accused by his mother, Sang-mi.
Sang-mi takes Min-guk to the hospital and finds out that he is unable to walk. Strangely, Min-guk, even after not being hit by the van and having no external injuries, demonstrates signs of being in a collision and loses the ability to walk. Due to this, Sang-mi files a case against Deok-ho, bringing Yullim Law Firm and Lee & Seo face-to-face, yet again.
Seong-chan from Lee & Seo represents Sang-mi and demands 200 million won from Doek-ho, who might also have to go to prison, as he had consumed alcohol. However, Hyo-min and Seok-hun arrive in time and save their client, Deok-ho, from agreeing to pay the amount, and take the case to court.
Beyond the Bar Episode 3 recap: Seok-hun rejects the offer of being a managing partner in Yullim
In Episode 3 of Beyond the Bar, Ko Seung-cheol confesses that he wants to retire soon to Seok-hun. But rather than his son, he wants Seok-hun to become the managing partner of Yullim.
However, Seok-hun refuses to take on the role as he does not want to lead a sinking ship. Seung-cheol inquires about Seok-hun's reason for thinking Yullim is a sinking ship. The matter does not seem to add up to Seung-cheol since Yullim has been regarded as one of the top law firms in Korea, given its revenue generation.
Seok-hun, without beating around the bush, tells Seung-cheol that, unlike other law firms such as Lee & Seo, Yullim only depends on the connections of their founders, giving them a clientele list of numerous wealthy businessmen. However, just like Yullim’s founders, their businessmen friends are also getting older and will not be standing as tall in the future, which might result in the decline of Yullim.
On the contrary, other law firms are trying to take risks and grow their client list, but Yullim tends to depend only on its decade-old list. Further, the firm is also known to hire relatives of friends and family, who do not do any real work and just enjoy their salaries, resulting in an incompetent workforce. Therefore, he rejects the offer of leading a firm that has no future.
Beyond the Bar Episode 3 recap: Seok-hun's harsh attempt to win the case
This episode of Beyond the Bar focused on the growth of a human being based on the environment they grow up in, which connects Min-guk, Hyo-min, and Seok-hun’s stories as well.
While investigating Min-guk, Hyo-min discovers that the child might have been harmed due to his mother, instead of Deok-ho. The doctors reveal that Min-guk is suffering from the nocebo effect, in which the shock of being in a traumatic situation makes the brain believe that the body has been in an accident and begins showing signs of injury that could have happened if the body really had gone through the accident or trauma.
However, the psych tests on Min-guk reveal that his mother might be suffering from Munchausen Syndrome, and her obsession with Min-guk's well-being might have harmed him more. This reminds Hyo-min of her own childhood, as her mother had also tried to mold her into the perfect child she wanted. Due to this, Hyo-min ended up developing a psychogenic dyslexia as a child.
Seok-hun fights the case and brutally questions Sang-mi to prove it was her own fault that left Min-guk that way. He tells Hyo-min that not all women want to become mothers, and not all women should become mothers. This thought process, which also stems from his own past, makes him unhinged as he breaks Sang-mi apart with his harsh questions, to prove that her obsession with her child is the biggest hurdle in Min-guk’s life.
