The It famous Swedish actor Bill Skarsgard starred in another Stephen King adaptation series, Castle Rock, in 2018.

After his breakthrough role as the clown Pennywise in It (2017), the actor was naturally skeptical about starring in another Stephen King adaptation.

As he revealed in a 2018 interview with Variety, the actor was not keen on taking The Kid's role in Castle Rock:

“I was a little bit reluctant going into it.''

He added:

''All I knew was that it was kind of Stephen King-connected, and just because I had just finished ‘It,’ I was like, ‘I’m not sure I want to do something — whatever this is — that’s so close to what I just did.’”

While Bill Skarsgard had his doubts about Castle Rock, a Pilot reading with creators Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason cleared them all. The actor was convinced that while Castle Rock is also a King adaptation like It, the project and story are completely different from his previous film, and he was on board.

More on this in our story.

Bill Skarsgard based his Castle Rock role on limited information about his character

Bill Skarsgard has now become synonymous with the horror genre, especially with King's spooky world, having played the creepy clown Pennywise in It and The Kid in Castle Rock.

The actor joined Hulu's horror TV series as a guest star in Season 2 as The Kid/The Angel, a mysterious inmate in Shawshank State Penitentiary, an iconic location across King's works.

The Penitentiary is a fictional state prison in Maine and the primary location of King's novella, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. The author has also used it across many other works, including Castle Rock.

While creators Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason put Bill Skarsgard's concerns at rest, they told very little information about the character before filming.

Known for perfectly bringing Pennywise, the clown, to life in It, the actor didn't have much knowledge about his character in Castle Rock. Much of Pennywise's preparation came from King's book and the film's script.

Bill Skarsgard based his It character on the way King envisioned in his novel, but working on Castle Rock was a different experience, as he discussed with Variety:

“That was weird for me to start shooting something I actually didn’t know how it was going to end or really where my character was going. It was important for me to know everything that my character new at any given point.”

However, the actor proved his acting chops and honoured the Castle Rock creators' wish to keep some details of the story a mystery.

While the actor had little material to base his Castle Rock character on, he used his experience working in another King adaptation (It), as he revealed:

“I committed to really big and bold choices, and thankfully it paid off, and there was something about that that was giving me a little bit more confidence.”

He added:

“In ‘Castle Rock,’ which I did right after, I was like, ‘Alright, I’ll commit to more things and maybe be bolder in my choices.'” It’s one of those things where, if it pays off, it’s great, and if it doesn’t, it’s terrible, but I think it’s a good toolkit to have in your arsenal.”

Bill Skarsgard will reprise his Pennywise character in the upcoming HBO series It: Welcome to Derry.
