Andy Muschietti is finally reviving the IT franchise alongside HBO & WB - Nosferatu star Bill Skarsgård makes his return as Pennywise to IT: Welcome to Derry, a prequel to the previous Stephen King adaptations. The upcoming 9-episode series will have an exclusive premiere later this year, and so far, no dates have been confirmed by any sources.
Recently, Max dropped a two-minute-long official teaser, and what is so far clear is that we will be taken back in time to the 60s. A troubled town is at the center of the story, and a sinister force is out to hunt down the natives, but there seems to be even darker secrets behind all of it. Here's a look at the synopsis of IT: Welcome to Derry, per IMDb:
"It will follow the events in the 1960s, the time leading up to the events of the first film in the Stephen King It series."
Do we have a release window for IT: Welcome to Derry?
As confirmed by HBO, IT: Welcome to Derry will be released in the fall of 2025. Though Max was initially supposed to exclusively air the episodes, now streaming rights have passed on to HBO. Whether all the episodes will premiere together or not still remains to be confirmed.
More about IT: Welcome to Derry
OG helmer Andy Muschietti is at the heart of the project alongside Barbara Muschietti while Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane have worked as co-showrunners. Per Variety, the story of IT: Welcome to Derry takes us 27 years prior to what went down in the first two IT films.
As the latest teaser portrayed, Pennywise is lurking around the corners of a town named Derry in Maine. Times are dark, and children have been going missing randomly. Though the police are at work trying to figure out the missing persons cases, secrets remain hidden.
The town of Derry has an infamous history of such disappearances, which have not been solved. As one of the children says in a scared voice on the trailer, it all sums up how the plot of the prequel might unravel:
"There's something bad here in Derry."
Per The Hollywood Reporter, franchise star Bill Skarsgård did not want to reprise his role as the fearful Dancing Clown. However, it's his regard and love for the directors that made him reconsider his role. According to his statement in an interview with Josh Horowitz:
"I felt like I was done with it,” Skarsgård explained. “Also, because I was shooting Nosferatu, it just felt like, ‘Okay, this is the nail in the coffin on my monster roles. But it’s Barbara and Andy, and I love them … and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. We got to explore different sides of old Pennywise. There’s some cool stuff in there that we haven’t seen."
Jovan Adepo stars in the upcoming series alongside Stephen Rider, Chris Chalk, James Remar & Taylour Paige in some of the main roles. Per Entertainment Weekly, Andy Muschietti further added that IT: Welcome to Derry has been adapted from 'a book' that everyone 'loves a lot'.
It is a story that portrays quite some diversity with its 'characters and events'. IT: Welcome to Derry not only explores the common themes that we saw in the previous films, but also touches on the impact of fear on people's lives and how it can be used against them as a lethal weapon.
