The third and final season of Billy the Kid premiered on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at 9:00 p.m. ET on MGM+. The season will comprise eight episodes, with new episodes releasing weekly until November 23, 2025.

Season 3 of the show casts Tom Blyth once again as Billy the Kid and picks up the story following the Lincoln County War. Billy is on the run, and Sheriff Pat Garrett (Alex Roe) will do anything to capture him, dead or alive. Billy faces a personal dilemma: he has a chance to have a future with the woman that he loves, Dulcinea (Nuria Vega), who informs him that she's having a baby.

This fictional story raises questions about Billy's legacy and whether or not the real Billy the Kid had any children. Reportedly, he never had any confirmed children.

There is no historical evidence to prove that Billy the Kid, who was born as Henry McCarty in 1859, ever had any kids. Although he had been involved with various women, including Paulita Maxwell, historians cannot confirm this rumor. Meanwhile, Paulita herself denied any affair with Billy. Speaking with True West Magazine, she stated:

“That old story… has been going the rounds for more than forty years, but it is not true. Billy the Kid and I were good friends, and that was all. If I had loved him and he had wanted me, I would have married him no matter what he had done or what the world might have thought. But neither of us ever dreamed of love or marriage, and the story of our planned elopement is absurd.”

She added:

“I know of one woman of wealth still living in New Mexico who ate out her heart for love of him. He had at various times three sweethearts in Fort Sumner.”

Following the death of Billy the Kid in 1881, Paulita Maxwell married José Felix Jaramillo on January 14, 1883. Their marriage was not a supposed "shotgun marriage" but a second-life union. To provide context, some historians propose that Paulita was possibly pregnant with the child of Billy the Kid when he died, and thus speculate that her union with Jaramillo was planned to prevent scandal. However, this theory lacks historical evidence and is considered speculative.

Meanwhile, Season 3 of the MGM+ series incorporates a fictional element with Dulcinea announcing that she is pregnant with Billy's child. The choice of this story serves to delve into themes of legacy and personal stakes, enhancing the emotional richness of the character's arc. However, it should be noted that this detail is a creative extension by the writers of the show and not grounded in historical reality.

Set against the post–Lincoln County War background, Season 3 explores unfinished business between Pat Garrett and Billy. The war may be over, but Billy is still at large, and Garrett wants him captured, dead or alive. Billy has to make a very significant decision: he can leave New Mexico and settle down with the love of his life, Dulcinea, but he is bound to stay due to unresolved business with Garrett.

Only the first episode of Season 3 had been released as of October 1, 2025. The finale will be released on November 23, 2025. The episodes last roughly 45–54 minutes and can be watched on MGM+, which costs $6.99/month or $4.92/month with their annual plan, and each includes a seven-day free trial. Services that allow people to access MGM+ and get free trials include Amazon Prime Video, fuboTV, Philo, DIRECTV, and Sling TV.

The season opening starts just days after the finale of Season 2. Billy and Dulcinea have escaped captivity and are on the run, seeking refuge within the New Mexico town of Saint Patricio. The episode follows the emotional aftermath of losses that Billy has endured recently, including losing his lover, Jesse Evans.

Billy grapples with grief and guilt and makes impulsive decisions that only make his situation worse. The episode lays the groundwork for the escalating conflicts between Billy and Pat Garrett, the sheriff, and highlights the personal losses at stake.
